Freezing rain, bitter cold will affect classes at schools in Tuscaloosa

NOTE: This story has been updated with the cancellation of classes at Tuscaloosa City Schools and the University of Alabama.

The Tuscaloosa County School System and Tuscaloosa City Schools have canceled all classes Tuesday because of weather forecasts that include freezing rain and bitter cold temperatures.

"... the weather predictions continue to have a high level of confidence that our area will experience potentially hazardous road conditions," said a Monday night email from Tuscaloosa City Schools.

The University of Alabama has also canceled all classes for Tuesday. This applies to the Gadsden campus as well.

Stillman College has canceled all Tuesday classes.

Shelton State Community College has canceled all classes at its Martin campus, 9500 Old Greensboro Road, and its' C.A. Fredd campus at 3401 Martin Luther King Jr Blvd.

All branches of the Tuscaloosa Public Library have also closed.

The potential for icy roads has led the City of Tuscaloosa’s garbage, trash and recycling collection service to be pushed back an additional day this week.

  • Monday routes will be collected Wednesday

  • Tuesday routes will be collected Thursday

  • Wednesday routes will be collected Friday

  • Thursday routes will be collected Saturday

On Tuesday, the municipal court, revenue, permitting and water and sewer offices will be closed to the public.

The Tuscaloosa area remains under a hard freeze warning through Tuesday night as a blast of arctic air grips the state.

Tuesday's high is expected to be 31 degrees with skies becoming sunny. The low Tuesday night is expected to be 12 degrees.

Wednesday will be sunny with a high temperature of 40 degrees and a low of 22 degrees Wednesday night.
