Freezing rain and an icy mix develop tonight

Icy conditions are expected in parts of central Indiana today. As of Monday morning, we’re tracking a few light snow showers in central Indiana, and in eastern Illinois, we’re seeing indications of freezing rain, which is also being reported in Champaign, Illinois.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for central Indiana. The advisory will be in effect in our western counties beginning at 4 p.m. and the rest of the area starting at 7 p.m.. It will remain in effect until Tuesday at 10 a.m. We can’t rule out some patchy freezing drizzle developing during the morning hours. However, dry air is in place, so much of this will be evaporating before it hits the ground during the early hours of the day.

Air temperatures will rise to the low and mid 30s this afternoon but the frozen ground will take longer to warm, hence, the potential for freezing rain. Hazardous travel will be very possible tonight and early Tuesday with areas along and north of the I-70 corridor being more favorable to see a buildup of ice along the roads. Precipitation will change over to all rain as temperatures warm Tuesday morning and afternoon.

Along with icy conditions and rain, fog will be a factor on Tuesday. Visibility of around 1-2 miles (or less) is expected in parts of central Indiana. This will likely be an issue that continues into the afternoon.

We’re tracking several wet days this week as temperatures warm to the 50s by Thursday!
