Fremont celebrates Fourth of July with parade, downtown events
FREMONT — The morning after a strong thunderstorm swept through the city, downing trees and causing power outages, residents cleared away the debris and made their way downtown for the city's annual Fourth of July parade Saturday.
Civic organizations, political candidates from the Republican and Democratic parties, and a host of fire and police vehicles paraded down South Front Street as spectators watched the long procession make its way down the street.
A group of pro-choice protesters joined the end of the parade to protest the recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling striking down the Roe v. Wade decision.
In addition to the parade, Fremont also had several other events planned for Saturday in celebration of Independence Day.
There was a car show downtown from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday with trophies and dash plaques and goodie bags for the first 150 registrants.
At 6 p.m., Down Thyme Cafe was to have hosted the Fremont Frankfurter Eating Contest at Front and Garrison streets.
On July 4, a patriotic concert will be performed by the Toledo Concert Band, featuring members of the Toledo Symphony Orchestra, on the verandah of the historic Hayes Home.
The Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Library and Museums’ annual Independence Day Concert is from 2 to 3:30 p.m.
Admission is free. Concert-goers are asked to bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating on the expansive lawn of the Hayes Home at Spiegel Grove, the estate of President Rutherford and First Lady Lucy Hayes.
Also on July 4, American Patriots Against Government Excess (American PAGE) will be sharing their Fourth of July Rally with the Sandusky-Ottawa County Young Republicans with the latter group being hosts of this and future events.
This event kicks off at 11 a.m. and will end around 1 p.m. in Birchard Park.
