French Police Hunt for Strasbourg Market Gunman

A manhunt was underway on December 12 after a gunman opened fire at a Christmas market in Strasbourg the night before, killing three people and injuring 13.

The attack took place at around 8 pm, and prompted government officials to issue an emergency security alert.

Police named the suspect as Cherif Chekatt, a 29-year-old with a long criminal history in France, Germany and Switzerland. Chekatt was also known to the French intelligence services.

Early on December 12, France’s interior minister, Christophe Castaner, visited the scene of the attack. Castaner told local media that security would be tightened at all Christmas markets throughout France in light of what happened.
