Fresh snow welcomed at Shawnee Mountain Ski Resort

EAST STROUDSBURG, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— While Tuesday’s storm continues to impact travel, many are enduring the weather as they head to the mountain.

The storm didn’t stop skiers and snowboarders from enjoying the fresh snow at Shawnee Mountain Ski Area.

One snowboarder told 28/22 News he was behind the wheel for four hours eager to take on the slopes.

Shawnee officials say this is the perfect storm to get ahead of Presidents Day weekend, one of the busiest of the season.

“I’m here to shred and there’s a bunch of powder falling, it’s a beautiful day, I mean you can’t get no better (sic) on a Tuesday,” said Hunter Schlegel, from New Jersey.

Beautiful and magical are words used by skiers and snowboarders as the snow falls at Shawnee Mountain Ski Area.

Schlegel is one of many who hit the road during Tuesday’s winter storm describing his hours-long drive from New Jersey due to the weather.

“Atrocious would be a great word for it, but slow and steady would be more consistent. Just followed behind the plow trucks, went about 25 to 40, and just let the old dog eat,” explained Schlegel.

Shawnee official Rachel Wyckoff grins from ear to ear admiring the winter wonderland on the slopes.

“We have about 11 inches up top, 8 inches down at the bottom, and it just set things up perfectly for a really great weekend coming up,” said Rachel Wyckoff, marketing director for Shawnee Mountain Ski Area.

This weekend marks President’s Day, one of the busiest times of year for ski resorts in our area.

Wyckoff says this storm is welcomed with open arms after recent curveballs mother nature has thrown their way.

“We’ve definitely had these warmer temps and we’ve had a lot of snow on the mountain, but sometimes when our guests don’t see snow in their backyard, they don’t really think about winter and skiing so this is just a perfect reminder to be like, ‘hey let’s go hit the mountains this week!’”.

Wyckoff says she thinks Punxsutawney Phil was wrong and winter is here to stay.

The mountain is holding extended hours for the holiday from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. beginning Thursday.
