Freshman's 3rd OT playoff winner lifts Scarborough to Class A hockey title

Mar. 13—Freshman Wyatt Grondin did it again.

His goal in double overtime in a 5-4 win over South Portland punched Scarborough's ticket to a state Class A boys hockey title game matchup with Thornton Academy of Saco and he earned the Red Storm their first state title since 2015 with another double-overtime winner on Saturday at the Cross Insurance Arena in Portland as Scarborough triumphed 2-1.

It was Grondin's third overtime winner in four playoff games as his goal in the first overtime gave Scarborough an opening round 6-5 victory over Portland-Deering before his heroics against South Portland and TA.

Grondin redirected Sam Rumelhart's shot past TA goalie Gage Tarbox-Belanger at the 3:05 mark of the second OT.

Scarborough wound up 13-8-1 while Thornton Academy finished at 15-6.

Will Fallona had staked the seventh-seeded Red Storm to a 1-0 lead early in the first period by snapping home a Rumelhart rebound.

But fifth-seed Thornton Academy tied it up with 5:42 remaining in regulation when Evan Beaudette converted a rebound following a multi-shot flurry.

Rumelhart had two assists for the winners.

Keegan Weed made 27 saves for Scarborough while Tarbox-Belanger finished with 30 for TA.

Tarbox-Belanger allowed only five goals in four playoff contests.
