Freshpet Recalled One Type of Their Dog Food Over Potential Salmonella Contamination

Freshpet has voluntarily recalled one type of its dog food, which was sold at Target and Walmart and other retailers in 12 states and Puerto Rico. The company is concerned about potential salmonella contamination and is asking customers—or rather the owners of its customers—to check the dog food ASAP to keep those beloved pups safe.
The specific target of the recall is the Home Cooked Chicken Recipe variety of the company's 4.5-pound bags of Freshpet Select Fresh From the Kitchen dog food that has a sell by date of Oct. 29, 2022 and the UPC code 627975011673, according to a recall notice issued by Freshpet Inc., and shared by the Food and Drug Administration. Both the sell by date and UPC code can be found on the bottom of the bags. That is the only type of Freshpet food that has been recalled.
If you buy Freshpet for your darling dog, the dog food in question was supposed to be destroyed, but instead was "inadvertently shipped to retailers in limited geographic markets in the last two weeks," the company stated in the notice. Southerners beware: that "limited geographic" market includes more than 100 Walmart stores in Alabama and Georgia. As KRON 4 news reports, the food was also shipped to some Target stores and other retailers in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, Rhode Island, Vermont and West Virginia.
Dogs with salmonella may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting, according to the FDA. Other doggos who have been infected with salmonella will have decreased appetite, fever, and abdominal pain. Pups can also be infected but have no real symptoms and still be carriers and infect other animals and people. If you are concerned about your pup or suspect they have been exposed to salmonella, talk to your veterinarian.
