Fresno councilmember seeks to close the digital divide with more internet access | Opinion

In today’s digital age, access to affordable and reliable internet connectivity is a necessity. It has become the lifeline for education, job opportunities, health-care access, and staying connected with loved ones. However, a significant portion of Fresno’s population still lacks access to this vital resource. The harsh reality that many of our residents are still left behind, unable to benefit from the vast opportunities and resources online.

As the sponsor of an unanimously passed resolution, I am committed to bringing focused attention to the Affordable Connectivity Program, and empowering residents to ensure that no one is left in the digital darkness and ensure that every resident in Fresno can take advantage of it.

According to the Census Bureau, 15.9% of Fresno County households lack access to a broadband internet subscription. Almost 175,000 Fresno County households, which equates to approximately 28,000 households in the city, do not have a stable broadband connection. The digital divide refers to the gap between those who have access to the internet and its benefits and those who do not. It exacerbates existing inequalities, disproportionately affecting low-income communities, students and marginalized groups. Fresno, like many other cities, has witnessed firsthand the detrimental impact of the digital divide on its residents’ lives. Limited connectivity leads to a pipeline of educational disparities, limited employment opportunities, and hindered access to essential services.

Since the pandemic, online resources have become increasingly important to stay connected within communities. Remote work, asynchronous virtual classes and online meetings all require a stable internet connection. The ACP can play a pivotal role in closing the digital divide and empowering our residents, ensuring that economic circumstances do not limit one’s ability to connect with the world. This program aims to provide affordable and reliable internet access to underserved communities, ensuring that no one is left behind in the digital age.

Currently, 58% of District 1 residents are enrolled in the ACP, much higher than the state average of 39%. Though a substantial percentage of District 1 residents are aware and take advantage of ACP, I would like to extend this program’s importance beyond my district’s boundaries. My recent initiative to pass a resolution on this matter, along with partnering with local internet service providers and leveraging government support, are the city’s stepping stones towards equitable internet access.

However, the benefits of the ACP extend far beyond just internet access. It opens a world of possibilities for our residents. With affordable connectivity, students gain access to a wealth of educational resources, online learning platforms and digital tools that enhance their learning experience. This program empowers students to excel academically and helps close the educational achievement gap within the comfort of their own home. Furthermore, the program creates opportunities for economic growth and development. With internet access, job seekers can access online job portals, remote work opportunities and acquire new skills through online courses. This digital empowerment leads to increased employability and upward mobility for residents, fostering an abundance of prosperity and resilient community in Fresno.

By ensuring affordable and reliable internet access for all residents, Fresno is unlocking new opportunities for residents to seek higher education, employment, and community development. However, the success of this program relies on raising awareness and fostering collaboration.

Let us come together as a community, spread the word, and empower every resident in Fresno to seize the benefits of affordable connectivity. Together, we can build a future where no one is left behind in the digital age.
