Fresno County coroner ID’s victim of fatal shooting near Fresno festival. He was just 16

The victim of a fatal shooting Saturday west of Fresno was identified Sunday by the Fresno County Coroner’s Office as Nolyn Chann, 16, of Clovis.

The shooting took place about 12:20 p.m. near Valentine and Princeton avenues, west of Highway 99 and less than a block from a Fresno Cambodian Buddhist Society festival.

Chann was taken to a local hospital, where he died. The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office said Chann was a student at Sunnyside High.

Deputies said the shooting was not random and that those involved knew one another.

Sheriff’s public information officer Tony Botti emphasized that the shooting was not related to the festival. Deputies, however, do believe some involved in the shooting may have ended up at the event afterward.

“We want to keep the community at ease,” Botti said shortly after the shooting,

“It had nothing to do with the event. It’s not like someone showed up to try to target people there and started shooting for no reason. “This just happen to be in proximity of where some people who didn’t like each other got into it and shots were fired.”

No arrests had been made Saturday. Anyone with information the shooting is asked to contact the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office at 559-600-8208 or Crime Stoppers at 559-498-7867.
