Fresno State has home matchup vs. Wyoming rescheduled. Now, it takes on more meaning

The Fresno State Bulldogs’ Mountain West men’s basketball matchup against Wyoming at the Save Mart Center didn’t figure to be one of the highlights of the home schedule back at the start of November.

The Bulldogs were picked in a preseason poll to finish sixth in the conference, the Cowboys in a tie for eighth.

But it will be, not only with two teams vying for a first-round bye at the Mountain West Tournament in March, but with two of the top players in the conference in the Bulldogs’ Orlando Robinson and the Cowboys’ Graham Ike.

The game was rescheduled for Sunday, Feb. 6 at the Save Mart Center, one of four games the conference was able to reschedule after postponements due to COVID-19 issues. Boise State will play at Wyoming and San Jose State will play at Utah State on Feb. 3, and Nevada will play at San Diego State on Feb. 6.

A time for the rescheduled contest has not yet been set. It was originally on the schedule for Jan. 8, and was postponed due to COVID-19 issues in the Cowboys’ program.

The game will be the third in six days for Fresno State (13-5, 3-2 in the MW) when it is played, but the Bulldogs will have five days after it before playing again at Colorado State.

Ike, a 6-foot-9 sophomore, is leading the Mountain West in scoring and is fourth in rebounding with 20.6 and 8.9 per game. He also is third in field goal percentage, hitting 55.6% of his shots.

The 7-foot Robinson is third in the conference in scoring and tied for fourth in rebounding with 19.7 and 8.9 per game. He also is third in blocked shots with 1.5 per game.

The Bulldogs play at New Mexico on Tuesday night, before returning to the Save Mart Center on Friday for a rematch against Boise State (15-4, 6-0), which has won 12 games in a row going into a Mountain West game Tuesday against Wyoming (15-2, 4-0), the last two unbeaten teams in conference play.

Fresno State lost its conference opener at Boise State 65-55 on Dec. 28, but was without forward Anthony Holland, who was at home due to health and safety protocols.
