How Fresno Unified will kick off Black History Month

FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – A special 10th-anniversary show will be held at a local high school to kick off Black History Month as part of district-wide collaboration.

Fresno Unified School District says students from all regions of the district have been preparing for the 10th-anniversary edition of their Black History Month celebration. Representatives from the Black Student Unions (BSU) have organized cultural and educational Black History Month activities for February.

Beginning Feb. 1, a show, themed “A Trip Down Memory Lane,” will honor and recreate some of the popular performances from the past 10 years with Purposed II Praise School of Dance co-hosting the event. Featuring the pre-show is comedian Andre Covington.

“Our Black History Month program is going to be especially great this year as our students and staff look back on 10 years of this wonderful tradition in our district,” said Superintendent Bob Nelson

Officials say the community event will highlight contributions made by people of African American and Black descent in the United States and the world.

“As always, this is a fantastic showcase for our talented students and an opportunity to learn more about Black history and culture,” said Nelson.

Anyone is welcome to attend and can buy tickets for $2 the day of the event at Roosevelt High School’s Audra McDonald Theater. The doors will open at 5 p.m.
