Comedian Mike Epps

The comedian, in the Amazon feature “Troop Zero” starring Viola Davis and Jim Gaffigan and who had his own "Only One Mike" special on Netflix, comes to El Paso with a performance at 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 12, at the Plaza Theatre.

El Paso Opera celebrates Frida Kahlo

The El Paso Opera and Alamo Drafthouse Cinema East El Paso will celebrate Mexican artist Frida Kahlo with a Frida Fest, starting at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 13, in the cinema's lobby. The celebration will include performances by opera artists, a Frida lookalike contest (5:45 p.m.) and a showing of the movie, starring Salma Hayek, at 3 p.m.

Movie tickets are $11 plus tax, available at drafthouse.com

Paint Frida

Paint your favorite Frida Kahlo masterpiece at the Plein Air Frida Kahlo Paint Studio from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday outside the Farmers' Market at Ardovino's Desert Crossing in Sunland Park, New Mexico. Back to School Giveaways

The Ysleta Art & Farmer's Market will have a Back to School giveaway from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 13, at 9100 Alameda Ave. The giveaway, by El Paso Public Libraries, will include free books, pencils, pens, bookmarks and more.

Molina Healthcare of Texas, in partnership with Centro San Vicente, will have a children's health day and back-to-school drive-thru event, offering backpacks, school supplies, and COVID-19 boosters for children 6 months and older.

The drive-thru will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 13, at Centro San Vicente, 8061 Alameda Ave.

One hundred backpacks filled with school supplies will be available on a first-come, first-served basis to students in the El Paso community. Children must be present to receive the items.

Bi-national art opening

Dallas-based artist Karla Garcia will have her temporary art installations open simultaneously Friday, Aug. 12, in sister museums. La Línea Imaginaria/The Imaginary Line will open from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Chamizal Museum of Archeology and History in Juárez. Free. It will open from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Chamizal National Memorial, 800 S. San Marcial. Free.
