No. 5 Lake Norman girls stop No 2 North Meck

Lake Norman’s girls remained undefeated Saturday, beating North Mecklenburg 67-66 in a battle of unbeaten top 10 Charlotte Observer Sweet 16 teams.

Lake Norman, No. 5 in the poll, beat the No. 2 Vikings behind 28 points, nine rebounds and five assists from reigning Charlotte Observer player of the week Kirsten Lewis-Williams. Alexis Shehan (11 points) and Samantha Shehan (12) also had big games.

Lewis hit the game-winning shot on a spinning layup after an out-of-bounds play with 6.4 seconds left.

Lake Norman led 33-25 at halftime and 47-39 after the third quarter. North Meck made a big fourth quarter behind Naveah Farmer, who had a game-high 36 points, but the rally fell short.

Lake Norman improved to 6-0. North Meck is 5-1.

Friday’s Boys Basketball Rewind: Ardrey Kell snaps streak

Coming into Friday’s Hickory Tavern-Chick-Fil-A Blakeney Classic, Ardrey Kell’s boys basketball team had lost three straight games. The Knights really needed a win at home.

They got a decisive one Friday night.

Ardrey Kell got 21 points from Brock Rose, 17 from Delani Hammonds and overwhelmed Asheville’s AC Reynolds 53-34.

The Knights (2-3) will play Raleigh’s Cardinal Gibbons Saturday at 2:30.

Charlotte Catholic, which beat Cardinal Gibbons Friday, will play AC Reynolds at 1 p.m. Saturday.
