Friday’s girls’ high school basketball rewind: No. 11 Marvin Ridge stops Weddington

Marvin Ridge used a big second quarter to break open a close game and beat Union County rival Weddington 56-47 Friday night.

Marvin Ridge, No. 11 in The Charlotte Observer’s Sweet 16 poll, led by one point after the first quarter, but allowed the Warriors to score just four points in the second.

On a night when the Mavericks would connect on 10 3-point shots, that provided more than enough cushion.

Marvin Ridge senior guard Kelsie Robitaille was one of the major catalysts. She played exceptional defense all game, hit a few 3-pointers herself, and finished with nine points.

“My job was to just lock up [Weddington’s Bailey Page],” Robitaille said. “She is a great inside and outside scorer. So, just making sure to lock down her was key.”

The win keeps Marvin Ridge out ahead in conference play, sitting one game ahead of Porter Ridge with the two playing each other next week.

“It will be a close game,” Robitaille said. “As long as we play selfless, we hit our shots and lock down on defense. We always play better when our defense leads to offense, so we will see how it goes.”
