Kentucky commit Billy Richmond poured in 26 points and made several key shots down the stretch Saturday morning, leading New Jersey’s Camden High School past North Mecklenburg 67-62 in the Hoophall Classic at Springfield, Mass.

The game was televised nationally by NBATV.

North Mecklenburg’s Isaiah Evans, a Duke commit, scored 21 points as the Vikings played their third game in less than four days.

Richmond and Evans, each 6-7 wings ranked among the nation’s top 25 players, were two of the big names in the four-day Hoophall event, which features many of the top boys’ and girls’ high school basketball teams from across the country.

Neitherdisappointed.

Richmond scored 17 points in the second half and had a pair of important 3-pointers in the fourth quarter.

With the Panthers (12-1) leading 53-45 and about 6½ minutes remaining, Richmond got the ball in the left corner and stood for a few seconds, with Evans defending in front of him. Richmond then decided to shoot and buried the 3-pointer.

Then, after North Mecklenburg (13-3) had narrowed the deficit to 58-53, Richmond got the ball again, deep on the left side. He dribbled for a few seconds, and with two Vikings defending, launched another on-target 3-pointer.

He also scored on a dunk early in the fourth quarter and got his final points with 10 seconds left on a windmill dunk.

Evans, however, had a good accounting of himself. He had 11 rebounds and three steals to go with his 21 points.

Evans, despite being double-teamed all game, scored nine points in the first half, which ended with Camden leading 31-29.

The lead changed hands four times in the third period, and the Vikings lead 37-35 after a 3-pointer by Evans.

Camden then went on a 14-0 run before Trey Maxwell sank a 3-pointer later in the quarter.

The Panthers defending Evans closely in the fourth quarter, putting Richmond and Emanuel Joel Samuel on the Vikings standout much of the time.

THREE WHO MATTERED

Billy Richmond, Camden: A 6-7 senior who has committed to Kentucky, Richmond was the game’s dominating force in the second half. He finished with 26 points, with 10 of those coming in the fourth quarter.

Isaiah Evans, North Mecklenburg: Although he was held to four points in the fourth quarter, Evans keyed the Viking offense most of the way. He finished with 21 points and 11 rebounds.

Alijah Curry, Camden: A 6-8 senior wing who transferred to Camden this year from his home town of Memphis, finished with 18 points. He has offers from Memphis, Ole Miss, Missouri, Mississippi State and LSU, among other schools.

NOTES

North Mecklenburg was playing for the fourth time in three days. The Vikings beat Chambers on Wednesday and Hopewell the next night. Then they flew to Massachusetts for Saturday’s game. The schedule originally called for the Vikings to have an off night between each game, but Tuesday’s contest was postponed a night due to the big early-week storm.

The Hoophall Classic is being played at Springfield College, near the College Basketball Hall of Fame. It features many of the nation’s top teams, including Montverde Academy (FL), led by Duke commit Cooper Flagg. Fans can see Montverde at 7:30 p.m. Sunday against Prolific Prep (CA). The game will be carried by ESPN2.

Evans scored 86 points during the week, totaling 36 against Chambers and 29 against Hopewell, before his 21 points Saturday.

Friday’s prep boys’ basketball rewind: No. 6 Cannon School dunks Country Day

CONCORD — The Cannon School starters didn’t play the fourth quarter against CISAA conference rival Charlotte Country Day on Friday night.

They weren’t needed.

The Cougars, No. 6 in the Observer’s Sweet 16, didn’t waste much time putting away the Buccaneers, ultimately winning 103-68.

Thanks to solid shooting and high-intensity defense, Cannon ran out to a big lead and didn’t look back.

“I thought the kids played great,” Cougars coach Che Roth said. “Anytime you play in (our) league there is nothing easy about it. (Bucs’) coach David Carrier is a good friend, and I think he is a heck of a coach. They are a talented team, and they play so scrappy and so tough.”

Cannon was led by 4-star Miami recruit Austin Swartz’s 18-point performance.

“I was just picking my spots,” Swartz said. “I draw most of the defensive attention, which is perfectly fine. It makes my teammates’ jobs easier. When I can do that, and get the ball moving around, it makes the team so much better.”

Cannon has played one of the toughest schedules in North Carolina, based on MaxPreps’ computer metrics. Roth feels like that tough schedule has prepared his team for the rest of the season.

“If you’re a high-level dude, you want to play other high-level dudes,” Roth said. “Our goal in building this thing is every year building one of the toughest schedules we can play. That way, by the time we hit January and conference play, even into a state championship run, we’ve seen just about everything.”

THREE WHO MADE A DIFFERENCE

Austin Swartz, Cannon: Swartz led the Cougars in scoring. He also dished out a few assists off of dribble-drive penetration that got his teammates a lot of open looks due to Country Day double-teaming him.

Jaylen Claggett, Cannon: He finished with 13 points and hit three 3-point shots in three quarters of play. He was on the receiving end of a few of Swartz’s assists. In the third quarter, Claggett also converted some tough finishes around the basket.

Isaiah Henry, Cannon: He may only stand at 6-foot-5, but Henry plays like a hard-nosed center for the Cougars. He matched his teammate Claggett in scoring with 13 points.

WHAT’S NEXT?

Cannon School plays Chambers on Saturday, Jan. 13 at 6 p.m. in the Phenom Hoops Martin Luther King Jr. event at Carmel Christian. Charlotte Country Day gets a few days off before it has to travel to Charlotte Latin School on Jan. 17. That game is at 7 p.m.

#BIG5 top performers

Jaylen Claggett, Cannon School: Claggett scored 13 points and hit three 3-point shots in a blowout win over Charlotte Country Day on Friday..

Shamari Johnson, Rocky River: In a 63-54 win over Providence on Friday, Johnson had a team-high 20 points.

Chase Owens, Gaston Day: In Friday’s 65-44 win over Westminster Catawba, Owens had 10 points, six rebounds and five steals. He also helped the Spartans hold Westminster to 15 points in the second and third quarters combined.

Sincere Rasul, Indian Land (SC): Rasul had a team-high 15 points in a 49-48 win over Rock Hill Northwestern Thursday.

Braden Wilkie, Lake Norman Charter: Wilkie had a team-high 20 points in Thursday’s 76-51 victory over South Rowan.
