Friday marks the anniversary of the coldest day in Columbus’ history

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – Although Columbus saw snow and freezing temperatures Friday, conditions were mild compared to a record-breaking cold that hit the city 30 years ago.

On Jan. 19, 1994, Columbus reached its coldest temperature ever recorded, at negative 22 degrees.

The cold wasn’t the only extreme weather the city saw – the freezing temperatures came after more than seven inches of snow fell over the city. That seven inches fell on top of existing snow, totaling to nine inches of snow on the ground.

Ohio wasn’t the only state affected by the cold spell. Parts of Indiana reached negative 36 degrees and temperatures were in the low 20s on the gulf coast.

Today, 30 years later, Ohio saw temperatures in the teens and 1.8 inches of snow. Flurries, wind and a high of 18 degrees can be expected on Saturday. For more of what to expect this weekend, click here.
