Friday night Beaver County football highlights, Week 5

Central Valley 42, Blackhawk 0 — Make it 33 straight wins for the Central Valley Warriors' football program and head coach Mark Lyons.

Taking on the Blackhawk Cougars Friday night at Sarge Alberts Stadium in Monaca in a 4A Parkway Conference matchup, the Warriors jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the first quarter, starting right away as the Cougars fumbled on the opening kickoff, setting up a 35-yard strike from Antwon Johnson to Deniro Simpson on Central Valley's first offensive play of the game.

On the next drive, Johnson found top receiver Jayvin Thompson for a 39-yard touchdown through the air, before star running back Bret FitzSimmons raced home from 38 yards on the ground to extend the Warriors' lead to 21-0, which held until the half.

Coming out of the break, The Warriors scored 21 second-half points to turn on the running clock as FitzSimmons scored two touchdowns from 1 yard out and 5 yards out, and Tyler Young scored the final touchdown of the night for the Warriors on a 6-yard run, helping Central Valley improve to 6-0 on the season.

On the night, FitzSimmons carried the ball 15 times for 131 yards and scored three times. Johnson completed 7-of-12 passes for 124 yards, two touchdowns and one interception, while Simpson led the Warriors in receiving with two catches for 54 yards and the score.

Sitting at 6-0 on the season, Central Valley travels to Montour in Week 6, while Blackhawk (3-3) hosts Aliquippa.

South Fayette 49, Moon 14 — A tough season continues for the Moon Area Tigers, as the 2021 5A WPIAL runner-up dropped another tough decision Friday night against South Fayette, 49-14, falling to 0-6 on the season.

South Fayette jumped out to a 28-0 lead after one quarter of play before eventually pushing the lead to 49-0 before Moon found its footing in the second half as Joey Marasco scored a rushing touchdown for the Tigers, and Brandon Weaver hauled in a 51-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Braeden Stuart.

Sitting at 0-6 on the year, Moon looks to bounce back in Week 6 as they host Peters Township in a WPIAL Class 5A Allegheny Six conference game.

OLSH 45, Chartiers-Houston 0 — Another week, another dominant win for the red-hot OLSH Chargers under first-year head coach Don Militzer.

Making the trek to Chartiers-Houston Friday night for a non-conference matchup, the Chargers cruised to a 45-0 win, taking a 24-0 lead at the half and never looking back, improving to 6-0 on the season.

Two defensive touchdowns on fumble returns by Dereon Greer of 27 yards and Javaughn Moore from 35 yards sparked the Chargers on a night in which they ran very few offensive plays. That said, quarterback Nehemiah Azeem finished 12-of-20 passing for 273 yards and two touchdowns, adding a rushing touchdown on the night.

Ziggy McIntosh led the way through the air for the Chargers with three catches for 115 yards and a score, while Ethan Gardner added three catches for 91 yards and a score. Running back Brandon Brazell provided balance for OLSH with seven carries for 45 yards.

Sitting at 6-0 on the season, OLSH gets set for a battle with Burgettstown in Week 6.

Beaver Area 35, Brentwood 6 — A three-touchdown performance on the ground from Liam Gibson helped lead the Beaver Area Bobcats to a dominant 35-6 win over the Brentwood Spartans Friday night in Pittsburgh.

Gibson scored on runs of 7, 61 and 32 yards on the night, helping put away the Spartans in the second half as the Bobcats shook off an early 6-0 deficit to bounce back from a tough Week 4 loss in overtime.

Along with Gibson's big night on the ground, quarterback Isaac Pupi found Jack Kohrmann for a 23-yard touchdown, and Qualan Cain scored from 2 yards out, helping spark the Beaver offense.

With the win, Beaver Area improves to 4-2 on the season. The Bobcats will make the trip to Avonworth in Week 6 for a big WPIAL Class 3A Western Hills Conference matchup against the Antelopes.

West Allegheny 43, Chartiers Valley 6 — A four-touchdown night three different ways from West Allegheny standout Brock Cornell led West Allegheny to a dominant 43-6 win over the Chartiers Valley Colts Friday in Imperial.

Cornell scored rushing touchdowns of 14 and 8 yards, added a 60-yard punt return for a touchdown, and finished the night with an 18-yard touchdown catch from quarterback Gage Upton, helping West Allegheny cruise to the win.

Nodin Tracy added rushing touchdowns from 2 and 1 yard out, Roman Police and Cornell picked off a pass each, and Hudson Clay recovered a fumble in the lopsided win for West Allegheny.

With the win, West Allegheny improves to 5-1 on the season. West Allegheny will hit the road in Week 6 to take on Ambridge in another 4A Parkways Conference matchup.

Mohawk 32, Ellwood City 13 — Aiming to pick up its second win of the season, the Ellwood City Wolverines' football program found itself locked in a tough battle on the road against Mohawk in New Castle, but ultimately came up short in the second half, falling 32-13 to drop to 1-4 on the season.

Trailing 14-7 at the half, Ellwood City allowed a 26-yard touchdown pass from Jay Wrona to Dante Retort before an errant snap on the PAT resulted in a 2-point conversion throw from Bobby Fadden to Retort, making it a 22-7 game. Ellwood City eventually responded in the fourth quarter with a 43-yard rushing touchdown from Elijah Palmer-McCaine, but the 2-point conversion failed, making it a 22-13 game.

Mohawk closed with 10 unanswered points on a 60-yard pass from Wrona to Fadden, and a 20-yard field goal from Josh Wilkins, capping off the Warriors' win.

Sitting at 1-4 on the season, Ellwood City travels to New Brighton in Week 6 looking for its second win of the season.
