Friday Night Highlights: Scores, stats and recaps from Week 1 football in Bucks County and Montco

It's been a long wait, but football is finally back! See how your favorite teams fared in their opening night matches, and all the excitement that comes along with opening night. And be sure to vote in the first Athlete of the Week poll of the season!

Upper Moreland 41, Hatboro-Horsham 0

Senior running back Stephen Broderick scored three touchdowns in Upper Moreland’s 41-0 season-opening victory over visiting Hatboro-Horsham on Friday night. Broderick’s TDS covered 8, 29 and 5 yards, giving Adam Beach a win in the first game of his third stint as Golden Bears coach.

Upper Moreland, which limited the Hatters to five first downs, also received touchdowns from senior Hassan Johnson (10-yard run), freshman Elijah Davis (25-yard run) and senior receiver Paul Meyers on a 28-yard screen pass from senior quarterback Shawn Herbert.

Council Rock North 21, Wissahickon 7

Council Rock North opened its 2022 campaign with an offensive surge in the second half. The Indians found the end zone twice and amassed nearly 200 yards in that span to hold off Wissahickon, 21-7.

Gavin Papp led the way with 104 second-half rush yards, including an insurance touchdown on a 26-yard direct snap run. Quarterback Julian Matera also threw for a pair of scores, one to Vaughn Vanderslice and the other to Julian Scibona.

Wissahickon's lone score came on a tipped pass that fell into the arms of Aidan Wescott, who took it the remaining 50 of 70 yards to break the shutout midway through the fourth quarter.

Council Rock South 21, William Tennent 7

Chase Myers ran for 121 yards and had the clinching touchdown, while the defense had four second-half sacks as Council Rock South rallied for a 21-7 win at William Tennent in the opener for both teams.

The Panthers held a 7-6 lead at halftime thanks to a 45-yard touchdown pass from Zack Stanfield to Liam Gibson.

Bensalem 24, Norristown 6

HS football: Defense name of the game in Bensalem's 24-6 victory over Norristown

Bensalem’s offense didn’t reach the end zone on Friday night, but that didn’t stop the Owls from beating Norristown.

The Owls relied on their defense and special teams. Zyan Greene returned a punt 69 yards for a touchdown, while Michael Schneider returned a fumble 35 yards for a TD and Nick Becht returned an interception 19 yards for a score.

Add in a Tommy Hurst field goal, and the Owls sent their fans home happy in the season opener.

Downingtown East 31, Pennridge 14

Pennridge senior Brennan Fisher scored on a 73-yard touchdown run on his team’s third offensive play. He also had a 55-yard TD run on the Rams’ final offensive play in the fourth quarter.

In between, however, this one was all Downingtown East as the Cougars steamrolled the Rams with a balanced run-pass offensive attack.

Neshaminy 21, Ocean City 0

Markus Barnett rushed for 273 yards and two touchdowns as Neshaminy opened the season with a resounding 21-0 win over Ocean City in the Battle at the Beach. Barnett was named the MVP of the game.

La Salle 37, North Penn 28

High school football: La Salle rallies late to upend North Penn

La Salle rallied from a big third-quarter deficit to post an impressive 37-28 win over host North Penn in a non-league battle of state powers Friday night.

Junior running back Stevie Davis led the way for the Explorers with 241 rushing yards on 30 carries. Most impressive, though, was the debut of freshman quarterback Gavin Sidwar. Sidwar threw for 213 yards and had four touchdown passes, while completing 10 consecutive pass attempts to start the second half.

Senior quarterback Ryan Zeltt was solid for the Knights, with 264 passing yards and one touchdown.

Coatesville 28, Pennsbury 6

Shane McGurrin threw a 75-yard touchdown pass to Nate Beighley as the Falcons put up a good fight but couldn’t overtake Coatesville as they opened their season on the road under new head coach Galen Snyder. Beighley finished with 65 rushing yards and 80 receiving yards.

Harry S. Truman 19, Chichester 2

The Tigers needed a little time to get warmed up, but once they did, it was all over for Chichester.

Rondell Bradley got things started with a 3-yard TD plunge in the third quarter, and the Tigers’ followed with an Abraham Bataille 18-yard rushing TD and finally a Nassir Jallah 8-yard touchdown to seal the deal.

Bradley, an all-around athlete, finished with 122 rushing yards, and had an interception and forced a fumble on defense. Bataille also reached triple digits with 100 yards rushing, as the Tigers rumbled for 323 rushing yards in the game.

Conwell-Egan 48, Upper Merion 20

After opening some eyes last season, the Eagles picked up right where they left off with a dominant season-opening win.

Gavin Pond powered the Eagles’ defense with a sack, a fumble recovery and five tackles for a loss as the defensive line overpowered Upper Merion’s offense the entire game. The Eagles opened the game with a sack and fumble recovery on defense, then scored on their next offensive play. The Eagles’ ground game was nearly unstoppable, with Colin Majors leading the way with three touchdowns and over 200 total yards. Tayshaun Tenor added 106 rushing yards.

Sincere Fairy returned a punt for 79 yards and a TD, and also had two sacks and one forced fumble.

Souderton 27, Haverford 7

Shaun Purvy had a 71-yard touchdown reception in his first game back from a season-ending injury in last year’s season opener. Chris Kerns returned an interception 31 yards for a touchdown, and kickers Ryan Zuk and Ty Quintois each booted a field goal as the Indians rolled to the week one win.

Central Bucks South 21, Plymouth-Whitemarsh 6

Brett Szarko threw two touchdowns in the second quarter, on to Jack Carver and one to Tommy Donnelly, as the Titans cruised to the win on opening night. While the offense excelled, it was the Titans’ defense that truly dominated. Sean Moskowitz had a sack, Matt Krysko caused a fumble, and the Titans recovered three PW fumbles in the second half.

Bristol 56, Kipp-DuBois 7

The Warriors dominated from start to finish, on offense and defense, against a beleaguered Kipp DuBois.

Kendall Cottrell led the way with 117 yards and two rushing touchdowns, and returned a kickoff 70 yards for a touchdown for good measure. Jaden Bobbs had 80 yards and scored twice, averaging 20 yards per carry, while Roshie Newkirk added another pair of rushing TDs. The Warriors totaled 217 yards and two touchdowns on the ground.

Meanwhile, the defense was just as prolific. Jaron Currington had 1.5 sacks and a defensive touchdown, while Xavier Shefcyk had a safety and .5 sacks.

Quakertown 42, Southern Lehigh 28

The Panthers started slow, but made up for it the rest of the way. Junior QB Vince Micucci, taking over the starting role this season, had an impressive debut, throwing a pair of TDs to Anthony Ferrugio and Adam Streahle, and passing for 184 yards. Cody Jefferson (129 yards) and Brett Hileman (44 yards) had big nights on the ground, with both scoring two rushing TDs. Jefferson’s second TD came in the fourth quarter, with the Panthers up by six points, to effectively clinch the win.

Garnet Valley 14, Central Bucks West 7

Last season’s playoff matchup saw Garnet Valley oust CB West 41-13. The rematch was decidedly more even sided, with Garnet Valley trailing until a late fourth-quarter score to take the win.

Jenkintown 28, George School 7

The Cougars’ first touchdown of the season - and the first of the Courier/Intell season - was a Jager Matera touchdown pass to junior wide receiver Akshay Fabrizzo as George School opened the season with an early game against Jenkintown. Jenkintowns’ Keegan Eichert had 112 rushing yards and two touchdowns as the Drakes picked up the win.

Cheltenham 26, Abington 8

The Ghosts scored on a safety and Jaime Rivera had a two-yard rushing touchdown, but Cheltenham’s Tre McLeod scored three touchdowns to put the game out of reach.

Bangor 27, Palisades 7

Central Bucks East 38, Chambersburg 21

This one wasn’t as close as the final score indicates, as the Patriots took a 31-0 lead into the fourth quarter. Ethan Shine had a pair of rushing touchdowns, while Pat Keller threw touchdown passes to Jack Donnelly and Luke Quillen. Tommy Day added to the scoring with a one-yard rushing TD, and Sean Connor had a sack.

Lansdale Catholic 49, Jules E. Mastbaum 8

Cole Meehan passed for 117 years, completing 80 percent of his passes, as the Crusaders dominated their season opener on Saturday. Meehan threw two touchdowns and ran for another. Jacahi Streeter added a 30-yard touchdown run, and also hauled in a TD reception, while Efrain Quiles had a long touchdown run of 35 yards, followed by Nicholas O'Brien's 22 yard rushing TD to close out the Crusaders' scoring.
