Week 1 of the high school playoffs is in the books and there were not many surprises.

The closest thing to a surprise in the Akron area came at Norton, where No. 16 Copley took the No. 1 Panthers to the wire in a 28-21 victory for Norton.

Tallmadge traveled to Steubenville and nearly pulled off an upset in a 41-35 loss in which quarterback Ty Hurst and receiver Collin Dixon starred for the Blue Devils in a game they could have won.

No. 15 St. Vincent-St. Mary lost 18-15 on a last-second field goal against No. 2 Dover.

The area's other top teams advanced as expected. Archbishop Hoban, Stow, Hudson, Nordonia, Walsh Jesuit, Barberton and Green rolled to lopsided victories and will face tougher tests this week.

St. Ignatius opens big lead

A fourth-quarter touchdown by the Wildcats has seemingly put an end to Stow's season. St. Ignatius leads 35-12 with five minutes to go in the fourth quarter of their Division I, Region 1 playoff game at Stow.

Green holds on to beat Hoover

After a back-and-forth fourth quarter, the Bulldogs held on to defeat the Vikings 14-10 in a Division II, Region 7 playoff game at Hoover.

A 5-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Matt Natale to Josh Campagna gives the Warriors their first lead of the game, 17-14, and the Explorers turn the ball over on downs and the Walsh has it back in Hudson territory late in the fourth quarter of their Division II, Region 5 playoff game in Hudson.
