President Trump walked from the White House to a stage on the South Lawn to give his Republican National Convention acceptance speech Thursday night, turning "the People's House" into "a partisan prop like no politician has ever done before," Michael D. Shear writes at The New York Times. "Previous presidents have sought to carefully navigate the propriety of mixing campaigning with governing," Shear noted, and while a few have announced their re-election campaigns from inside the White House, none has used it for such an "overtly political event," with "live crowds flanked by giant Jumbotrons on either side of the White House, serving as immense campaign billboards."
The Kenosha police union on Friday offered the most detailed accounting to date on officers' perspective of the moments leading up to police shooting Jacob Blake seven times in the back, saying he had a knife and fought with officers, putting one of them in a headlock and shrugging off two attempts to stun him. The statement from Brendan Matthews, attorney for the Kenosha Professional Police Association, goes into more detail than anything that has been released by the Wisconsin Department of Justice, which is investigating. The Sunday shooting of Blake, a Black man, put the nation's spotlight on Wisconsin and triggered a series of peaceful protests and violence, including the killing of two people by an armed civilian on Tuesday.
Becki Falwell had a sexual encounter with one of her son's 22-year-old Liberty University classmates in 2008 and pursued him for months after, Politico reports. The former student told the outlet that he and Trey Falwell were in a rock band together, and while the former student stayed in a guest room the Falwells' house after a rehearsal, Becki Falwell entered his room and began to perform oral sex on him. The bandmate also said Becki Falwell would flirt with the student during band practices while her son was present.
An Iranian has been sentenced to nine years in jail for beheading his teenaged daughter in her sleep, local media reported Friday, adding that the mother wants him executed. The so-called "honour" killing of 14-year-old Romina Ashrafi on May 21 sparked widespread outrage, with media condemning "institutionalised violence" in the Islamic republic. Media said Romina was decapitated at the family home in the village of Talesh in the northern province of Gilan.
Elon Musk confirmed on Thursday Tesla was the target of a failed, "serious" ransomware attack. The US Department of Justice on Tuesday charged Russian national Egor Igorevich Kriuchkov with trying to bribe an employee at a Nevada-based company to install malware for him, offering $1 million in return. The DOJ didn't name the company in its complaint, but Electrek reported it was Tesla on Thursday.
Joe Biden and Donald Trump Getty Images/Salon Progressives are raising alarm over new poll results from CBS News out Tuesday, which suggest the Democratic Party's courting of moderate so-called "Biden Republicans" while sidelining popular progressive proposals and voices has not so far resulted in a groundswell of support for Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden from disaffected GOP voters. In a poll taken between August 20 and 22, after the Democratic National Convention wrapped up last week, CBS found that just 5% of self-identified Republicans said they plan to vote for Biden in the November election; 93% said they were planning to vote for President Donald Trump.
Conservative commentator Ann Coulter tweeted support for accused Wisconsin shooter Kyle Rittenhouse, saying "I want him as my president". Twitter removed Ms Coulter's statements for violating the platform's rules after users took offence at her opinion, made in response to a user saying they wanted the teenager as a "bodyguard". Mr Rittenhouse, 17, was charged with first-degree intentional homicide in connection with shootings that left two people dead during the violence in Kenosha on Tuesday night.
Jacob Blake was shot seven times by a Kenosha police officer and paralyzed from the waist down. "He can't go anywhere," but the 29-year-old Black man was handcuffed to his hospital bed and deputies were standing guard in his room, his father told the Chicago-Sun Times. After an incident in May, Blake was charged with felony sexual assault as well as disorderly conduct and criminal trespassing, both misdemeanors, court records show.
The final night of the Republican convention, which featured President Trump's acceptance speech from the White House South Lawn, had an average audience of 23.8 million viewers Thursday, putting it slightly behind the TV turnout for his Democratic opponent, Joe Biden. The figure from Nielsen is 3% lower than Biden's total of 24.6 million viewers on Aug 20. Trump's total is also well below the 35 million TV viewers who watched him accept his party's nomination in 2016, and falls short of the acceptance speeches of previous Republican nominees John McCain (38.9 million viewers in 2008), Mitt Romney (30.3 million viewers in 2012) and George W. Bush (27.6 million in 2004).
Thousands of people took to the streets on Saturday in Russia's far eastern city of Khabarovsk to protest against President Vladimir Putin's handling of a regional political crisis and the suspected poisoning of his most vocal critic. "Putin, have some tea," protesters chanted as they marched on the city's main thoroughfare, in a reference to the case of opposition politician Alexei Navalny who fell gravely ill this month after drinking a cup of tea at an airport cafe. Navalny, 44, was airlifted to Germany last week after collapsing during a flight to Moscow from the Siberian city of Tomsk.
The Fox News anchor Chris Wallace pushed back against panelists on a talk show on Thursday after one pundit appeared to justify vigilante justice at the Kenosha protests by blaming Wisconsin's leadership. "On the argument of vigilante justice, when you have no police around to defend businesses and people who are being attacked and their livelihoods burned to the ground, then there is a void that is filled," Katie Pavlich said. Kyle Rittenhouse, 17, of Antioch, Illinois, is accused of shooting and killing two protesters and injuring a third person earlier this week.
CNN's Dr. Sanjay Gupta couldn't be more exasperated by President Trump's decision to speak before a packed crowd at the Republican National Convention, fearing some attendees could die from COVID-19 as a result. Trump on Thursday delivered his acceptance speech at the RNC before a crowd of about 1,500 people who weren't practicing social distancing and few of whom were wearing masks, a fact Gupta sounded the alarm about on Friday morning, expressing deep frustration that such an event took place during the coronavirus pandemic. "The history books will be written about this chapter in our lives at some point, and it will show events like that and say that in the middle of a pandemic ...
Anti-government protesters tussled with police in the Thai capital on Friday as 15 leaders of their movement turned themselves in at a police station to answer a summons linked to a demonstration last month. The protesters are part of a student-led pro-democracy movement demanding new elections, amendment of the constitution and an end to intimidation of government critics. The economy has struggled to compete with its neighbors even before the damage inflicted by measures to counter the coronavirus pandemic, which include shutting down Thailand to foreign tourists.
Nearly 40 children are now safe and sound after a two-week operation involving state and federal authorities in Georgia. The U.S. Marshals Service, with help from state police and other local agencies, rescued 26 missing children and ensured the safe location of 13 others as part of “Operation Not Forgotten,” the agency announced Thursday. “These missing children were considered to be some of the most at-risk and challenging recovery cases in the area, based on indications of high-risk factors such as victimization of child sex trafficking, child exploitation, sexual abuse, physical abuse, and medical or mental health conditions,” authorities said.
The Lake Dolores Waterpark in California's Mojave Desert has been abandoned three times since it first opened to the public in 1962. Like many abandoned properties, the Lake Dolores Waterpark has offered plenty of fodder for ghost stories. People frequently ignore "no trespassing signs" to pose in front of a dried-out pool or decaying water slide.
Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden's latest ads take direct aim at swing states and Latinx Americans across the country. Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny is backing the former vice president and Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) in the 2020 election, and lent one of his hits to a new ad for the Democrats. The ad features footage of excited President Trump fans in 2016 juxtaposed with a sparsely attended recent rally, as well as Trump's Bible photo-op and that time he hugged and kissed a flag.
After a Black man fatally shot himself on a pedestrian plaza in downtown Minneapolis, rumors of another police shooting in the city still reeling from the death of George Floyd began spreading quickly on social media, sending concerned residents and activists to the area — many of them anxious and some of them misinformed. Tensions and anger have been running high in Minneapolis since Floyd's May 25 death, and some activists say community members are mobilizing more quickly as incidents occur — refusing to wait for explanations from a city police department they don't trust. “I just think that things have reached a boiling point and people are fed up,” said community activist Nekima Levy Armstrong.
North Caroline teens Alex Cueto and Hannah Bauerle are going viral on TikTok for their recent video in which Cueto reads the lyrics to "WAP" in response to a protestor outside an abortion clinic. Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion's "WAP" is a sexually explicit song. Cueto says they chose it because it's about women "reclaiming our bodies."
