Friday Night Stars: Who is the Gazette Football Player of the Week for Week 1
TAUNTON— It's that time of year once again: high school football is back in the Greater Taunton area.
All four area teams kicked off their respective seasons last Friday, with Taunton earning a 33-7 win over New Bedford in a game that was shortened for safety concerns. Bridgewater-Raynham were shut out 42-0 on the road by Milford while Bristol-Plymouth fell 20-8 to Old Colony in a matchup coach John Parris called "a great test" for his young team and Dighton-Rehoboth lost 30-7 to Canton.
As always, some players stood out above the rest, but only one can be named the Taunton Daily Gazette Week 1 Player of the Week. Voting is open until noon Sunday and is limited to one vote per device per hour.
Here are the Week 1 nominees:
Jacob Leonard, Taunton
Leonard went 13-of-14 for 198 yards and a pair of touchdowns against New Bedford.
Declan Byrne, Bridgewater-Raynham
Byrne went 7-of-18 for 56 yards against Milford.
Brayden Alves, Bristol-Plymouth
Alves had 11 carries for 67 yards and a touchdown against Old Colony.
Joel DaSilva, Dighton-Rehoboth
DaSilva threw a 22 yard touchdown pass to Cole Bilodeau and made the resulting point after kick against Canton.
Elijah Prophete, Taunton
Prophete recovered a fumble and returned it 62 yards for a touchdown against New Bedford.
Dawson DuBose, Bridgewater-Raynham
DuBose had 14 carries for 36 yards against Milford.
Tucker Bumila, Bristol-Plymouth
Bumila had a sack and a couple of tackles in the backfield against Old Colony.
Cam Newman, Dighton-Rehoboth
Newman had 10 tackles against Canton.
