5:45 p.m. — Weekend field nearly settled as cut day ends

Round two at the RBC Heritage Presented by Boeing is drawing to a close and 74 golfers are poised to survive the cut.

The top 10 held firm throughout the afternoon, save for a late resurgence from Viktor Hovland, who held a brief lead on Thursday. Hovland shot 1 under par on the day, improving his tournament score to 8 under par and moving into a five-way tie for fifth place.

Jimmy Walker’s 12-under-par lead remains well out of danger. Walker’s excellent second round pushed him three strokes beyond Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele and Justin Rose, who share a tie for second place at 9 under par.

Savannah local and former Georgia Bulldog Brian Harman, after slipping into a tie for 30th earlier in the day, recovered to enter a tie for 10th place. Harman is shooting 7 under par for the tournament.

Several high-ranked Tour pros are likely to head home earlier, including No. 27 Tom Hoge and No. 7 Max Homa.

South Carolina native Ben Martin is still riding the edge of the cut line through 14 holes. After ending day one even with par, Martin improved to 2 under par Friday, even with the score required to make the cut.

Saturday play begins at 8:30 a.m., but other tournament staples will keep spectators busy.

The Boeing flyover will take place on the 18th hole at 4 p.m., and Plaid Nation games on the Heritage Lawn run from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m.

3:45 p.m. — Top 10 holds steady, light rain moves in

Following a hectic morning of leaderboard shakeups, standings have held relatively firm midway through the afternoon.

Jimmy Walker maintains a commanding 3-stroke lead over Scottie Scheffler and Justin Rose, both tied for second. Of the five golfers tied for fourth place, only Xander Schauffele remains in play.

Through 10 holes in his second round, Schauffele is 4 under par and one stroke away from joining Scheffler and Rose in a second place tie.

Savannah’s Brian Harman slipped down the standings in Day 2. Harman briefly led the field during play on Thursday, and still resided in the top 10 Friday morning. But since then, he’s shot 2 over par on the day, lowering his tournament score to 4 under and falling into a tie for 30th.

A light drizzle and imposing clouds moved in around 3:30 p.m., but the minor weather is not expected to impact play.

2 p.m. — Jimmy Walker steadily grows lead

Jimmy Walker continued to impress Friday afternoon, widening the gap between himself and several golfers tied for second and fourth place.

Walker ended his day 12 under par — 3 strokes ahead of the second place tie between Scottie Sheffler and Justin Rose.

The tight battle for fourth place has largely wrapped up after Mark Hubbard, Tommy Fleetwood and Patrick Cantlay ended their second rounds 8 under par. Aaron Rai and Viktor Hovland, also tied for fourth, were still golfing as of 2 p.m.

12:30 p.m. — Cantlay sinks hole-in-one, Rahm continues hot streak

Patrick Cantlay, last year’s Heritage runner-up after narrowly losing a playoff to Jordan Spieth, has leapt into the top 10 after a 200-yard hole-in-one on hole 7.

The shot echoed a similar stroke from Corey Connors at last year’s tournament. Connors also sank his hole-in-one on hole 7.

Meanwhile, Masters champion Jon Rahm - who finished round one 1 over par and buried on the leaderboard - has posted a bounce-back 6 under par performance to soar up the rankings and into a tie for 11th place. Rahm is one stroke removed from a tie for 7th place and a potential spot in the top 10.

Lowcountry native Brian Harman will tee off at 1 p.m. today. Shooting 6 under par, the Savannah native will have to stay hot to keep pace with an early field that started the day strong.

11:30 a.m. — Englishmen and Americans back-and-forth for No. 1

A trio of English pros have established themselves at the top of the leaderboard early in the second round. Former tournament leader Aaron Rai remains in a strong position thanks to his Thursday afternoon performance, still tied for third place despite shooting even on the day Friday.

Tommy Fleetwood has soared into the top 10 after finishing 2 under par Thursday. He’s shot an impressive 6 under par in the second round, sinking five birdies to pull even with Rai in a third-place tie. Justin Rose has claimed the top spot at 9 under par.

The group from across the pond is joined by three American golfers keeping steady pace. Jimmy Walker has followed up his top 10 finish Thursday with another strong performance, shooting 3 under par and tying Rose for first place.

Mark Hubbard and Scottie Scheffler are looking to overtake Rai and Fleetwood at the third place spot, all shooting 8 under par.

10 a.m. — Justin Rose takes lead, Rahm making a run

Justin Rose and Mark Hubbard jumped out to early runs Friday and are battling for first-place position at 8 under par.

The pair overcame previous leader Aaron Rai following a Rai bogey on Hole 12. Rai remains 7 under par and in a three-way tie for third place.

Masters winner Jon Rahm resurrected his Heritage hopes early in the second round, scoring four consecutive birdies after starting the day 1 over par. He now sits at 3 under, tied for 28th.

9 a.m. — Cut day begins with Spieth climbing, Rai overtaking the lead

Early play in Round 2 of the RBC Heritage Presented by Boeing shook up the top of the leaderboard, as Englishman Aaron Rai overtook top-10 pro Viktor Hovland for the top spot.

Rai, an 11-year pro who has yet to win a PGA Tour event, surprised spectators late Thursday by surging past the likes of defending champion Jordan Spieth and Masters winner Jon Rahm. He was one of several unexpected Round 1 standouts: Pro Jimmy Walker and Savannah native Brian Harman also remain in the top 10.

Jordan Spieth, last year’s Heritage winner, broke into the top 10 early Friday after hovering just out of reach for most of the first round. He sits at 6 under par through his first three holes, in a five-way tie for fourth place with many holes remaining.

The tour’s top-ranked golfer, Jon Rahm, will have to overcome an apparent Masters hangover to advance into weekend play. Rahm sits 1 under par tied for 52nd but is shooting 2 under par early in the day, a significant improvement on Thursday’s over-par performance.
