Friday's high school scores: Durfee baseball explodes on offense in season-high output

MIDDLEBORO — There were plenty of fireworks at the plate by the Durfee baseball team on Friday.

The Hilltoppers recorded a season-high 21 runs and 21 hits, winning a high scoring affair against non-league opponent Middleboro, 21-13, at Middleboro High School.

Decon Mello was 4-for-5 with an RBI, four runs scored and a walk for Durfee (7-6). Josh Martel had three hits, three RBI, scored two runs and walked. Jacob Cavaco banged out three hits, scored three runs and had two RBI.

Alexis Montilla contributed three hits, scored two runs and had two RBI. Ryan Lopes started the offensive explosion with a grand slam in the first inning.

The Hilltoppers play a rematch against Middleboro on Saturday.

Greater New Bedford 7, Somerset Berkley 6

The Raiders' comeback fell short against league opponent Greater New Bedford.

Dom Alderman had three hits for SBR (9-5; 6-3 in SCC). Dean Gobeil and Owen Derocher each finished with a pair of hits.

The Raiders travel to Apponequet on Monday.

Diman 21, Tri-County 0

The Bengals bounced back from a loss to blank Tri-County in a mercy-rule contest.

Freshman Ian Morales Campbell pitched five innings for his first varsity win for Diman (11-2). He allowed just two hits, struck out three and walked two. Campbell took a no- hitter into the fourth inning.

Offensively, Sam Perry went 4-for-4 with five runs scored. Byron Bell had three hits while Lucas Cabral went 2-for-3 with four RBI. Leadoff batter Alex Rivest collected two hits and scored three runs. All starters had at least one hit in the Bengals' 19-hit attack.

Diman hosts Southeastern Regional on Wednesday.

Bourne 2, Joseph Case 1

The Cardinals fall short against league opponent Bourne.

Colby Smith pitched the complete game for Case (9-5; 5-4 in SCC), scattering seven hits, two runs while walking none.

Cooper Khoury had a double and a run scored. Christian Chapman, Ryland Pacheco and Will LeBoeuf each finished with a hit.

The Cardinals travel to Seekonk on Monday.

Dartmouth 3, Bishop Stang 2

The Spartans dropped a tough game against Dartmouth.

Justin Gouveia had a hit, a walk and RBI for Stang (10-3; 8-2 in CCL). Jackson Tingley Prince contributed a hit and scored a run. Ryan Jones also had a hit.

The Spartans host the first round of the CCL cup against St Mary’s of Lynn.

SOFTBALL

Joseph Case 8, Bourne 1

The Cardinals banged out 12 hits and went on to beat league opponent Bourne.

Hailey Berube and Emera Marcello combined for 10 strikeouts while giving up just three hits. Berube also belted a home run. Brooke Orton had three hits, including a double and triple. Olivia Silva had a pair of hits, including a double.

Megan Smith had two hits, including a triple while Abby Sirois finished with two hits.

Diman 6, Tri-County 0

The Bengals blanked league opponent Tri-County at home.

Julia Gardner went 3-for-4 with a home run and two stolen bases for Diman (11-5; 6-1 in MAC Large). Patryce Vital had three hits while Skylah Lacroix went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

The Bengals travel to West Bridgewater on Monday.

Greater New Bedford 3, Somerset Berkley 1

The Raiders lost a close game with undefeated Greater New Bedford.

Laney Martin pitched great for SBR (10-4), allowing just four hits, fanned four batters while giving up three earned runs.

Sydney Bednarz went 2-for-3 at the plate while Makenzie Jacob had a hit and an RBI. Victoria Dematteo also contributed a hit.

The Raiders host Apponequet on Monday.

New Bedford 11, Bishop Stang 1

The Spartans lost to non-league opponent New Bedford

Katie Manzone (RBI), Mikayla Brightman (BB, run), Grace Motto and Avery Clough each had a hit for Stang (3-11).

The Spartans travel to Arlington Catholic on Monday.

BOYS TENNIS

Durfee 5, Middleboro 0

The Hilltoppers took five straight matches against Middleboro.

Jorge Beltran (4-6, 6-4,10-8 super tiebreak, Chris Panchley (6-1, 6-0) and Will Rumsey (6-0, 6-0) each won their singles match for Durfee (11-3; 4-1 in SEC).

Jesse Tamba and Jack Fitzgerald won at first doubles, 6-1, 6-3. The Hilltoppers won by forfeit at second doubles.

Westport 4, Wareham 1

The Wildcats won four of five matches against non-league opponent Wareham 3-9

Sophomore Sam Van Saun won his first victory for Westport (3-9) at first singles (7-5, 6-2). after coming from behind 4-1 in the first set.

The Wildcats host Bishop Connolly on May 18.

GIRLS TENNIS

Middleboro 3, Durfee 2

The Hilltoppers dropped three of four matches against Middleboro.

Dalia Karam (6-1, 6-2) and Liv Rumsey(6-4, 6-2) each won their singles match for Durfee (5-9). Morgan Ledo lost a heartbreaker at third singles, 3-6, 6-7(5).

The Hilltoppers host Bridgewater Raynham on Tuesday.

Wareham 5, Westport 0

The Wildcats lost five matches to non-league opponent Wareham.

Westport senior captains Sam Parker and Kyra Ferreira were recognized before the match. Parker has been with the team since seventh grade while Ferreira has been there since the eighth grade.

The Wildcats (7-5) travel to Bishop Connolly on Wednesday.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Durfee 3, Braintree 0

The Hilltoppers swept all three sets — 25-19, 25-18, and 25-13 — against Braintree.

Mac Reed was great on serve receive and also had 19 digs for Durfee (5-10). Jack Gauvin had 26 assists and 10 service points while Tony Gomes finished with 11 kill shots and five blocks.

Josh Sanon contributed nine kill shots and Anthony Grannum had five kill shots and four blocks. Danny Matuszek was 15 for 15 serving, and Caio Morais and Matt Medeiros each served well.

The Hilltoppers host Greater New Bedford on Monday.

GIRLS OUTDOOR TRACK

Durfee

Shakira Cadet had the best jumping day in her high school career during Friday's MSTCA State Coaches Twilight Meet.

Cadet won the long jump, the triple jump (37-3) and the high jump (5-2). She also qualified for National in the long jump with a jump of 18-4.
