Friday's HS sports highlights: Carrollton claims Pirate Invitational title

Senior Jaxon Rinkes fired a one-under-par 71 and fellow senior Colton Moore was next with a one-over-par 73 as the Carrollton High School boys golf team topped Dover 297-307 to win the Pirate Invitational hosted by Garaway which was played at Black Gold Golf Club in Sugarcreek on Friday.

Jacob Hanner, Zach Dale and Dylan Grewell all had 75s to lead Dover and Ryan Yoder added a 82.

Hiland, Indian Valley, New Philadelphia, Sandy Valley and West Holmes also competed from the area in the first major area tournament of the 2022 season.

The host Pirates ended up third with a 316 as Carter Miller and Trace Gibson each shot a 75, while Nick Maust carded an 81 and Keshawn Miller rounded out the Garaway scoring with an 85.

The Hawks, the defending Division III state champions, finished fourth shooting a team score of 318.

Nathan Kline paced Hiland with a 75 followed by Lucas Yoder (77) Camden Bille and Monty Coblentz (83) and Jack Mast (86).

Sandy Valley ended up ninth with a 342 as defending Division II state champ Connor Ritter fired a 74 to lead the Cardinals. John Wood (87), Lucas Ellington (88) Dantae Faiello (93) and Thorn Stenger (94) followed.

New Philadelphia finished 10th with a 345 and Indian Valley was 11th with a 352.

West Holmes was 12th with a 383. Trey Baker led the Knights scoring with an 83. Grady Toye (90), Daniel Baird (99) and Marcus Miller (111) followed.

Tusky Valley ended up 13th with a 454.

Massillon won the JV title as it defeated John Glenn.

Devon McGlothlin from Dover was medalist with a with a 77.

Strasburg 181, Conotton Valley 215

Strasburg began its season by shooting 181 and defeating Conotton Valley and Newcomerstown

Trenton Bitikofer led the Tigers with a 42 followed by Jason Grywalsky (45), Blayne Cooper and Gage Bonifant (47s) and Parker Edwards (49).

Girls golf

Dover 184, Northwest 239

Dover opened its season with a win over Northwest at Zoar Village.

Riley Schie led the winners with a 42 followed by Piper Olson (45), Mya Downing (48) and Izzy Lint (49).

Northwest was led by Sadie Villers 54.

Carrollton 177, Alliance 236, Fort Frye 222

Carrollton opened its season with a 2-0 mark after defeating Alliance and Fort Frye at Carroll Meadows.

Ashlee Garner led the winners with a 35 and Claire Hostetler had a 41, while Jada Moore posted a 50 and Paige David carded a 51.

Anna Eversdyke and Bridgett Runion led Alliance with 55s. Deray Layton paced Fort Frye with a 44.

Indian Valley vs. Sandy Valley

Emily Jones carded a 46 as Indian Valley traveled to Sandy Valley to open the season.

The Braves shot a 216 as the Cardinals only had three players. Natalie Holbrook (51), Abby Jones (54) and Riley Positano (62) followed Jones.

Ashlyn Glaser led Sandy Valley with a 46, while Ava Schoeppner (50) Sarah Deford (76) followed.
