Friends and Neighbors: Carl Kizer Jr. honored with Chamber of Commerce Legacy Award

Carl E. Kizer Jr. was presented with the Muncie-Delaware County Chamber of Commerce Legacy Award on Jan. 20 during the 2022 Muncie-Delaware County Legacy Gala at the Horizon Convention Center.

“The Chamber was very pleased to award the Legacy Award to Carl Kizer for the many contributions he has made to the Muncie-Delaware County community,” Chamber President and CEO Jay Julian said in a release.

Mr. Frank Scott Sr., president of the Whitely Community Council and chairman of the Muncie-Delaware County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, presented the award to Kizer, who is the owner of Kizer’s Carpet Care.

The Legacy Award is presented annually to an individual who has made extraordinary, sustained, and positive contributions to the Muncie-Delaware County community at large, and who has provided leadership in the development of programs, events and/or new traditions that promote good will and community pride, according to a release.

Reception to honor retiring MPL facilities manager

Gary Bartling, Muncie Public Library facilities manager, will retire at the end of January after more than 49 years of dedicated service to the library, according to an announcement from MPL.

A public reception in Bartling’s honor will be 4-7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 27, at Carnegie Library, 301 E. Jackson St. in downtown Muncie. Friends, family, and MPL customers are invited to attend this free event; no reservations are needed. Light refreshments will be served. Due to COVID-19 concerns, masks are appreciated.

Delta senior receives SAR Eagle Scout Award

The Continental Chapter, Indiana Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) will present the chapter's Eagle Scout Award to Eagle Scout Aidan Pierce during the SAR meeting on Feb. 19.

Pierce is a member of Crossroads of America Boy Scouts of America Council and registered in Troop 1. In addition to achieving the highest rank in the Boy Scouts of America, he has earned 24 merit badges. His Eagle Scout project provided a new serenity garden at the East 16th Street Church of God, where he is a member.

A senior at Delta High School, Pierce is the son of Tony and Jenifer Pierce.

During the same local SAR meeting at which Pierce will be honored, Madison County historian Steve Jackson will present a program on "Their Last Full Measure of Devotion - Colonel William Hardy Link" at 10 a.m. Feb. 19 at Hazelwood Christian Church. The meeting is free and open to the public.

Local artists' work on display at Indiana State Museum

Works by three local artists are among the pieces recently acquired by the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites and scheduled to be displayed Feb. 5-July 17 at the museum in the new exhibit “Collecting Indiana: Recent Art Acquisitions.”

Among the 26 new pieces in the display are “Xenred” by John Paul Gee (Delaware County), “Stable Gallery” poster by Robert Indiana (Henry County) and “Betty’s Cabin” by Dan Woodson (Delaware County), according to a release.

“Collecting Indiana” is free with admission to the Indiana State Museum in Indianapolis: $17 for adults, $16 for seniors 60 and older, $15 for college students, $12 for children ages 3-17, and free for children younger than age 3. Information: indianamuseum.org or 317-232-1637.
