Actor Matthew Perry's cause of death has been confirmed.

The Friends star passed away in October this year aged 54, with an autopsy report confirming that Perry's death was an "accident" caused by the "acute effects of ketamine" (via BBC News).

A post-mortem examination carried out by the Los Angeles County medical examiner added that contributing factors to his death included drowning, coronary artery disease and the effects of buprenorphine (a drug used to treat opioid use disorder).

The actor had been found unresponsive at his California home on October 28.

Perry had risen to fame playing the role of Chandler Bing in the hugely popular sitcom, which aired from 1994 until 2004, earning him a Primetime Emmy nomination in 2002. He also starred in 17 Again, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip and The Kennedys: After Camelot.

Following his death, the actor's family established the Matthew Perry Foundation – which aims to honour the actor's legacy of supporting those "struggling with the disease of addiction."

Perry had previously been open about his own battle with addiction.

"The Matthew Perry Foundation is the realisation of Matthew's enduring commitment to helping others struggling with the disease of addiction," the foundation said in its mission statement.

"It honours his legacy, guided by his own words and driven by his passion for making a difference in as many lives as possible."
