Friends of Sutter County Library to host author Naomi Hirahara

Sep. 26—Next week, the Friends of Sutter County Library will host award-winning author Naomi Hirahara at the Sutter County Library in Yuba City.

Scheduled from 5:30-7 p.m. on Oct. 4, Hirahara will speak to those who attend and be available for questions and answers. Organizers said she will focus on her "extensive volume of work."

"Naomi Hirahara is an Edgar Award-winner and is the Mary Higgins Clark Award-winning author of 'Clark and Division,'" organizers said. "Her Mas Arai mysteries, which have been published in Japanese, Korean, and French, feature a Los Angeles gardener and Hiroshima survivor who solves crimes."

Hirahara's seventh and final Mas Arai mystery is "Hiroshima Boy." Organizers said it was nominated for an Edgar Award for best paperback original.

"Her first historical mystery is 'Clark and Division,' which follows a Japanese American family's move to Chicago in 1944 after being released from a California wartime detention center," organizers said. "Her second Leilani Santiago Hawai'i mystery, 'An Eternal Lei,' was released in March 2022. Her newest book, 'Evergreen,' tells the story of a Japanese American nurse's aide who navigates the dangers of post-World War II and post-Manzanar life as she attempts to find justice for a broken family."

Hirahara is a former journalist who has written numerous nonfiction books, such as "Life after Manzanar" and the award-winning "Terminal Island: Lost Communities of Los Angeles Harbor," organizers said. She also has written a middle-grade novel called "1001 Cranes."

The Sutter County Library is located at 750 Forbes Ave. in Yuba City.
