Two superpowers meet as they compete for global influence
President Joe Biden said he remains hopeful that the U.S. and China can work together during a Monday meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping. It's the first time the U.S. and Chinese leaders will have seen each other in person since Biden took office. The meeting was months in the making and comes as Biden seeks to win friends and influence Southeast Asian nations in an effort to isolate Russia and tame China. His administration calls the approach "friendshoring." It's intended to help the U.S. form stronger alliances with nations that can help discourage China from taking military action against Taiwan. Midterms 2022: Where are we now?
Democrats have secured control of the Senate with Nevada Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto's victory Saturday night, but control of the House of Representatives remains undecided, with a handful of competitive races yet to be called on Sunday. Republicans are forecasted to regain control of the chamber, but any GOP majority is expected to be as narrow as the Senate. Read more
One thing to know: Republicans are grappling with disappointing midterm election performances across the country, and some members of the party have started to pivot away from former President Donald Trump.
DeSantis is rising after Trump is under fire over the midterms. After Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis cruised to a blockbuster reelection win last week, some supporters cheered for him to start planning another campaign: a 2024 Republican presidential bid against Donald Trump.
After Masto secured her seat over the weekend, Democrats are guaranteed control of Congress' upper chamber no matter the outcome of a Dec. 6 run-off in Georgia between incumbent Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock and Republican challenger Herschel Walker.
Republicans have a much easier path to control of the House than Democrats. And in the meantime, Democrats are jockeying to push through whatever they can in the upcoming weeks of the lame-duck session before the new Congress is seated.
Ukrainians dance in Kherson as Zelenskyy calls out 'atrocities'
The end of Russia's eight-month occupation of Kherson city has sparked days of celebration but also exposed a humanitarian emergency, with residents living without power and water and short of food and medicines. Russia still controls about 70% of the wider Kherson region. In his nightly video address on Sunday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is accusing Russian forces of having committed “the same atrocities as in other regions of our country” before they were forced to pull out from the strategic southern city of Kherson and its surrounds.
