Frightensburgh kicks off month of spooky fun in Murfreesboro area
By day, Cannonsburgh in Murfreesboro takes tourists on a walk-through of Rutherford County history through a replicated pioneer village.
Over the weekend, this sleepy little village turned into a nightmare of haints and horrors with Murfreseboro Parks and Recreation’s annual Frightensburgh.

MPRD volunteers transformed the rustic scenery into a haunted house where would-be tourists traversed the property to meet some rather ghoulish and ghastly things. A maniac with a chainsaw, ghosts awakened from the dead and terrors from the shadows spooked those who dared to go.
There are more ghostly as well as good-natured happenings planned for October.
Mourning at the Mansion
Oaklands Mansion, 901 E. Maney Ave. in Murfreesboro, will host Mourning at the Mansion from oct. 17-29. Explore the macabre traditions surrounding death in Murfreesboro during the 19th century. Self-guided tours are offered from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays and evening tours are hourly from 7-9 p.m. Oct. 27. Cost is $20.
Old Scream Road
Visit Old Scream Road for Murfreesboro’s scariest hayride from 7:30-9 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Oct. 21-22, at Barfield Crescent Park, 697 Veterans Parkway. The hayride wanders through the heavily wooded park. The activity is recommended for ages 10 and older. Cost is $5 per person.
Barfield Bash Carnival
If you’re a little afraid of Old Scream Road, head over to Barfield Bash from 5-8 p.m. Friday and Saturday to play some ghostly and earn prizes, enjoy spooky music and participate in a costume contest. There will also be story time, a paranormal petting zoo and a fortune teller, among other carnival-style offerings.
Clue Party
The fourth annual Clue Party will be a night of mystery, murder and madness on Oct. 22, when community members play characters from the classic board game, Clue. A murder has happened at the Gray Mansion (Oaklands Mansion) and the guests will use clues marked around the mansion and interview the characters to solve the murder.

Goblins and Goodies at the Park
Head to Veterans Memorial Park, 5093 Murfreesboro Road in La Vergne, for Goblins and Goodies in the Park from 2-4 p.m. Oct. 22. This free event features games and a hike through the park for a free trick or treat.
Zombie Night
La Vergne will host Zombie Night from 5-8 p.m. Oct. 22 at Veterans Memorial Park, 5093 Murfreesboro Road in La Vergne. Lace up your dancing shoes for a dance party. At 6 p.m., take your chairs and picnic dinners to the football field for a showing of “The Addams Family 2.” Admission is free and concessions will be sold.
Harvest Days
Enjoy food trucks, vendors, rafts, hayrides, living history demonstrations and other activities at Harvest Days, held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 22 at Cannonsburgh Village, 312 S. Front St. in Murfreesboro. Admission is free.
Clue Jr.
Bring the whole family to solve the mystery at Clue Jr., set for 12-2 p.m. Oct. 23 at aklands Mansion 900 N. Maney Ave. in Murfreesboro. Based on the Clue board game, everyone has a motive and it’s up to each family to solve the mystery.
Cost is $25 for adults and ages 15 and older, and includes entry for one child who is 14 and younger, with additional children admitted for $10 each. Visit wildgoosechase.events/product/clue-jr-2022-tickets/ to purchase. Proceeds benefit Murfreesboro Little Theatre, the city’s oldest community theater group.
Spooky Splash
Don your swim gear for Spooky Splash at Patterson Park Community Center, 521 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. in Murfreesboro, from 5-8 p.m. Oct. 28. There will be swimming, crafting, dinner and a special dessert. Please bring a white T-shirt to tie dye. The activity is for ages 8-14 and cost is $5 for those who preregister and $7 at the door. Halloween in the Park
Smyrna Parks will host Halloween in the Park from 3-8:30 p.m. Oct. 29 at Sharp Springs Park, 1000 Espey Drive. There will be games, costume contests, a $2 corn maze, inflatables, $1 hay rides, food and more than 80 vendors at this outdoor event that is free and open to the public.
Fall fest
Patterson Park Community Center, 521 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. in Murfreesboro, will host a fall festival for ages 8-12 from 5-7 p.m. Oct. 31. There will be games, food, prizes and crafts for all ages. Cost is free.
