Frigid Cold Air in Minnesota Causes Halo to Appear Around the Sun

Minnesota resident Carol Bauer captured video of the sun surrounded by a halo that formed during a winter storm at Graceville, Minnesota, bringing with it wind chills that were forecasted to reach -45 degrees Fahrenheit on February 12.

Weather observers claim the ring that forms around the sun refracts off ice crystals present in a thin veil of cirrus clouds.

Bauer told Storyful she decided to capture the scene because the roads were “in decent driving condition” despite a blizzard warning and the below-freezing temperatures in Graceville. Credit: Carol Bauer via Storyful
