Frisco Lone Star tops Bel Air boys in Class 5A state championship game

GEORGETOWN — Bel Air was able to overcome an early deficit in Thursday's Class 5A state soccer semifinals to rally for a win.

In Saturday's state championship match against Frisco Lone Star, the Highlanders never found a way to fight their way back into the contest.

The Rangers withstood several early surges from Bel Air that didn't quite find the net and turned the tide for good in the 21st minute with a goal from Bartek Zabek on their way to a 4-1 win against the Highlanders at Birkelbach Field.

Bel Air lost for the first time this season as the Highlanders were looking for the second soccer state championship in school history.

After several early Bel Air opportunities came up empty, most notably a rebound shot attempt from Ruben Esparza in the first three minutes, Lone Star evened possession and used its speed up top to capitalize.

Zabek added a second goal in the second half, and the Rangers scored on a set piece after a foul just outside the box in the 60th to take a 3-0 lead.

Sebastian Licon connected with Ruben Esparza on a nice cross into the box for a header goal in the 69th minute to pulled one back, but the Higlanders could draw no closer. Tucker Eason finished the scoring in the 74th with a penalty kick.

Bel Air ended the season 28-1-1.
