It’s shaping up to be a sweet spring and summer in Southeastern North Carolina.

Wilmington is still going crazy for the recently opened Crazy Mason Milkshake Bar location near Independence Mall. And the area is also getting a Jeremiah’s Italian Ice, which makes 40 flavors of the icy treat, as well as ice cream, at 3852 Carolina Beach Road.

But Brunswick County is also home to new spots to get doughnuts, cakes, and frozen yogurt. Here's a look.

Nonnie’s Baking Co.

After building a reputation for beautiful custom cakes, Savannah McCullum Overcash is opening a storefront at 1517 N. Howe St. with an official grand opening of the "sweets boutique" on May 6.

Overcash has worked in a few bakeries to learn the craft and has been working towards the dream of opening her own ever since. She wants dessert lovers to know the treats can taste as good as they look. In addition to wedding and custom cakes, she'll have a variety of cupcakes, cookies, Rice Krispies Treats and mini cakes. Many of them are decorated with Italian meringue buttercream, which offers balanced sweetness and a silky smooth finish.

The mother-daughter team of Dani and Alivia Nace started with a food truck named Lucy. The popularity led to the opening of their first shop at 1159 River Road in Calabash on April 22, and there's also a second location in the works with a possible opening date this summer in Ocean Isle Beach at 1 Causeway Dr.

They specialize in made-to-order doughnuts, which Nace said she's making throughout the day. In addition to standard flavors, she'll eventually add seasonal specialties like Strawberry Shortcake and Key Lime Pie. The menu also includes coffee and ice cream specialties like the Donut Sundae, a Donut Swirl where the treats are mixed into soft serve, and Donut Sandwich, where the ice cream and toppings are stuffed into a doughnut.

One part of this business is already open, as of April 15, selling frozen yogurts with a variety of toppings, and other desserts like brownies and cookie sandwiches. Look for fruit-based boba teas, flavor-of-the-day frozen treats (like the Valencia Orange Sorbet) and Frozen Yogurt Cookie sandwiches at 4956 Old Long Beach Road Suite in Southport.

But there’s more planned for May, when the owners plan an expansion to include adding a wine and craft beer area at 4956 Old Long Beach Road Suite in Southport. When the final permitting is in place, you can find beer, cider, wine by the glass or bottle. You’ll also be able to build your own snack boards with cheese, crackers and meats, as well as other snacks.
