From Billy Elliot To Spider-Man: Who Is Tom Holland?

It’s official – the all-new Spider-Man has finally been revealed as none other than Tom Holland. But who is that? Yeah… we weren’t too sure, either.

It’s no secret that Peter Parker enjoys his fair share of anonymity. After all, he wouldn’t get through a regular day of high school if everyone knew he was Marvel’s infamous webslinger.

But while Aunt May and Uncle Ben have no idea who Peter really is, it looks as though the whole world is about to learn the name Tom Holland.

Most importantly, will he make a great Spider-Man? With great power comes great responsibility…

At the age of 19, Tom Holland has landed one of the most high-profile superhero roles there are… and with all eyes on the Marvel/Sony collaboration, it’s an exciting time for the all-new webslinging superhero.

But while he may not be a household name, Tom Holland isn’t exactly short of experience.

Billy Elliot: The Musical

After the huge success of ‘Billy Elliot’, it wasn’t long before the film was adapted into a stage show… and this was one of Tom Holland’s first big acting gigs. Joining the cast as Billy’s friend Michael, the young actor made his West End debut in 2008. But it wasn’t long before he stepped up, nabbing the leading role.

Appearing in the title role from September 2008, Tom Holland received rather positive notices… and continued to appear as Billy Elliot on-and-off until 2010.

The Impossible

Moving on to Tom Holland’s first big screen role, ‘The Impossible’ tells the story of a British family stranded after the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami… and their efforts to reunite with each other.

Starring opposite Ewan McGregor and Naomi Watts, Holland played their 12-year-old son. Touted by famed critic Roger Ebert as “one of the best films of the year”, ‘The Impossible’ marks an incredibly strong entry into the world of cinema.

And that’s just the beginning.

How I Live Now

A British drama based on the 2004 novel of the same name, ‘How I Live Now’ follows the story of Daisy – a neurotic American teenager (played by Saoirse Ronan) who is sent to stay with family in the UK just before a large-scale terror attack on London.

Tom Holland plays Isaac – one of Daisy’s cousins – and as chaos and fear strike across the UK, it isn’t long before the increasingly close family becomes torn apart.

Fighting for survival in uncertain times, it’s an interesting foray into what might happen after a terrifying attack on the country. And Tom Holland plays his part marvellously.

Wolf Hall

Based on the historical novel by Hilary Mantel, ‘Wolf Hall’ is a rather epic fictionalised biography which documents the rise of Thomas Cromwell in the court of King Henry VIII. A six-part miniseries made for BBC Two, the show first aired in January 2015 and has already won several awards.

Here, Tom Holland plays Gregory Cromwell – the only son of Thomas Cromwell himself. Starring opposite Mark Rylance, Damian Lewis, Mark Gatiss and even Jonathan Pryce, it’s no doubt that Holland was part of a rather prestigious and expansive cast.

And that might stand him in good stead for when he inevitably join The Avengers…

In The Heart Of The Sea

Although ‘In The Heart Of The Sea’ hasn’t hit cinemas yet, it’s already making waves. Telling the true story of the whaleship Essex as it was sank by an enraged sperm whale, it stars Chris Hemsworth as First Mate Owen Chase with Tom Holland as Thomas Nickerson, the cabin boy.

And that means our first glimpse of Thor and Spider-Man side-by-side on the big screen.

Of course, the upcoming ‘Spider-Man’ reboot will be Tom Holland’s biggest big screen role to date – after all, it’s not every day that you get to head up your very own comic book movie franchise.

But will he make a great Avenger? For now, we’ll have to wait and see.
