On the Front Porch: Annie Mae undergoes oral surgery

·2 min read

It has been quite the summer for my collie Annie Mae and me.

Annie Mae had to have oral surgery and had four teeth removed and what was left had to be cleaned. Dr. Snyder told me what he found when Annie Mae went in May for her annual check-up.

As he informed me, he told me to open my mouth.

"Your teeth are worse than hers. For 10 more bucks you can lay down beside her and I'll pull all of yours."

I was a little concerned as he hand-tapped a pair of pliers. I bypassed the invitation.

Annie Mae went in for her surgery July 5. She was a bit groggy when she got home but two days later she was carrying Frisbee out the back door. I withheld throwing Frisbee for a week but it seems we're all back to normal.

Annie Mae even offered me one of her pain pills.

"You're the one who had the surgery, not me," I said.

"I thought you might need one when you see the bill."

Actually it was a pretty reasonable price to pay to have Annie Mae' breath not smelling like a dead frog laying in the sun for a week.

In other summer developments,  you may remember from the July column I bought a riding mower. Things are progressing much better in August. I have not mowed down any of my neighbors this month. They are much quicker getting out of the way. I think the exercise is doing them good.

And now that it is August, I am ready for the annual highlight of my year. I will be going to the Hartford Fair to devour my annual Trojan burger at the Centerburg Athletic Boosters pavilion. This burger resembles the original Big Boys and is a meal unto itself. As you can tell, when the highlight of my year is a hamburger I appear to lead a fairly dull life.

But all in all it has been a good hot summer for old Toothless and me.

Larry Fugate is a local freelance writer and On the Front Porch appears the first Sunday in The Advocate. He better watch out calling Annie Mae toothless. She still has some sharp incisors still left.
