Frontal passage brings a return of rain and cold air

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — After seeing mild temperatures this week, a cold front pushing through the region Friday night leads to a big change in temperatures this weekend!

Ahead of the front, a southerly wind Thursday will filter moisture into the region. The moisture in place will lead to an increase in cloud cover late Thursday evening into Friday.

Friday itself will begin dry, but partly to mostly cloud. The active weather doesn’t look to arrive until late in the day and overnight.

A line of showers will develop along the front with embedded downpours and isolated storms possible. The line is forecast to move into Northwest Alabama by Friday evening and then track eastward across the Tennessee Valley overnight.

Rainfall totals look to remain on the lighter side and will not be similar to what we saw last weekend. The main things we’ll be monitoring closely are any storms that develop, localized heavy rain and gusty winds. Wind gusts will range from 25-30 mph.

IF cold air can filter in fast enough and there is enough lingering moisture in place, higher terrain spots, and southern middle Tennessee could see snowflakes. This will be highly dependent on when the cold air arrives and if there is enough moisture in place.

Behind the front, colder and drier air will quickly move into the region as the wind shifts out of the north. This will bring a quick end to shower activity early Saturday morning. While showers end quickly, clouds will take a little longer to clear out.

Many will see their high temperatures early Saturday morning before they begin falling through the day. The highs are forecast to reach the low to middle 40s.

It will turn even colder on Sunday morning, as temperatures drop into the 20s. Don’t be surprised if you wake up to frost on the ground or on your windshields!

The sun will return on Sunday, with highs still chilly, but warming into the low 50s. It gets even warmer heading into the upcoming week, with highs expected to be back into the 60s by Monday.
