HEBRON, Ky. -- Frontier Airlines will add six more flights from Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport in May, boosting the discount airliner’s destinations from CVG to 20.

The new routes will take bargain-hungry travelers to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood and Pensacola in Florida; Portland, Maine; Charlotte, North Carolina; Boston; and Houston.

Additionally, Frontier announced earlier that it would add service to New York’s LaGuardia Airport and Minneapolis/Saint Paul this spring.

“It’s a big deal for us,” Bobby Spann, CVG vice president of air service development, said Tuesday in announcing the expanded service.

Denver-based Frontier has played a key role in establishing CVG as a lower-cost airport in the region, Spann said. About 35% of all CVG traffic is now on low-cost carriers, with Frontier currently ranked as the airport’s fourth busiest behind Delta Air Lines, American Airlines and United Airlines.

Frontier will launch seven of its eight new destinations from CVG in mid-May, with flights to LaGuardia beginning April 10. It will offer one-way $19 fares on the routes for tickets purchased before midnight on Friday and used by June 19.

“Cincinnati is near and dear to the hearts of those of us at Frontier,” said Cincinnati native Michael Pewther, senior director of field marketing and sales for Frontier.

Frontier will support its expansion plans by establishing a crew base at CVG in May. It plans to hire at least 80 pilots and 160 flight attendants locally, adding to its current staff of about 60 and boosting its total local payroll to about $27 million a year.

The airline will recruit flight attendants at an open house on Wednesday at the Hilton Cincinnati Airport Hotel at 7373 Turfway Road in Florence. RSVPS for 9 a.m., 2 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. sessions are open on Facebook and LinkedIn.

Frontier will mark 11 years as a CVG airline in May, having flown 7.8 million customers on about 49,000 flights since then.

With the six new destinations announced Tuesday, Frontier will be increasing its average peak summer daily departures by 57% compared to a year earlier.
