Placing third in Olympic and traditional was McKeel, scoring 12 and 31 points respectively.

Individuals who are advancing to traditional regionals thanks to placing first are the following: Frostproof’s Shelbi Weir (101), Frostproof’s Chelsie Palmatier (110), Mulberry’s Natalie Sherrill (119), Frostproof’s Jamie Conner (129), Frostproof’s Bailey Tuck (139), Frostproof’s Miriah Morales (154), Forte Meade’s Valeria Garcia (169), Mckeel’s Alexia Davis (183), Frostproof’s Jordin Wilson (199) and Mulberry’s Emma Grace Gonyaw (unlimited).

Those who advanced to regionals in Olympic thanks to finishing first are the following: Weir, Palmatier, Frostproof’s Alondra Barajas (119), Connor, Tuck, Morales, Mulberry’s Arianna Amarante (169), Wilson and Frostproof’s Lily Espina.

Frostproof head coach Julie Mulder said she couldn’t be prouder of a Bulldog program that won six traditional district championships out of seven years.

“They did what they needed to do. We had some girls that actually went above and beyond,” Mulder said. “We lost our No. 2 lifter in the 39s to an illness, and that was tough. But we had some girls step up and make up that point differential loss. And a lot of girls just put up new numbers today. They went above and beyond from what we expected from them.”

Wilson, though, had a high expectation, as she is one step closer to going to state for the second time in her high school career. To satisfy this expectation, Wilson ate right and went to the gym every day ahead of districts, eventually tallying a total lift of 270 in traditional, and 235 in Olympic competition to place first.

“It feels good. It feels relieving because I worked hard to get here,” Wilson said. “I was proud of myself.”

Seventh-year Mulberry head coach Jennifer Parrish said she was ecstatic about her team winning district runner-up for the second time since she’s been the coach. But there is a reason why the program has been successful.

“The biggest shift this year is that we have a lot of … girls that are pretty new,” Parrish said. “It’s exciting to see the sport take more of a hold of our school and just become more popular. And with stuff like this, we will bring more and more girls into the sport, which is really important for young women.”

Sherrill is a prime example. Last year, she placed last in traditional. This year she finished first with a total lift of 205. And because Sherrill can do this, she believes others can follow.

“If you think you can’t do something, just know that you can,” Sherrill said.

Gonyaw, who had a total lift of 245 and placed first in traditional, echoed some of the same sentiments as Sherrill.

“If you’ve never been good at something no matter what it is, just try, because that’s how I felt. I was no good in sports … but you can,” Gonyaw said.

The 1A-3 region meet will be Feb. 3 at The Villages High School.
