FSU drops six straight, 9 of last 10 heading into Tuesday's game vs. UF in Jacksonville

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Virginia – Despite a three-hit day from freshman Titan Kamaka, Florida State dropped the series finale at No. 8 Virginia, 15-4, Sunday afternoon at Disharoon Park.

FSU (12-12 overall, 3-6 ACC) has dropped six consecutive games and nine of its last 10.

Virginia ran out to a 9-0 lead after scoring eight times in the bottom of the third inning.

Kamaka’s three hits were a career high, while Jaime Ferrer doubled to extend his hit streak to a career-long 15 games. Cam Smith hit his fifth home run of the season in the top of the eighth.

  • Jaime Ferrer led off the sixth inning with a double, his team-high 10th of the season. The hit extended his hitting streak to a career-long 15 games, the seventh-longest for a Nole over the past 10 seasons:

  • Titan Kamaka earned his seventh start of the season, finishing with an RBI and a career-high three hits. After hitting a pinch-hit home run in the ninth inning yesterday, Kamaka is 13-for-38 (.342) on the season.

  • Jamie Arnold made his sixth start of the season, tied with Jackson Baumeister for the team lead.

  • James Tibbs III walked in the seventh inning, extending his on-base streak to 17 games. He has drawn 25 walks, 16 more than the next closest Seminole.

  • Freshman Davion Hickson pitched the eighth inning, his first appearance as a Seminole. He struck out a batter and did not allow a run in 1.0 innings.

Saturday's game 2

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Virginia – On the strength of a six-run seventh inning, No. 8 Virginia (21-2, 6-2) clinched the series against Florida State (12-11, 3-5) with a 12-4 win Saturday afternoon.

Left fielder James Tibbs III hit his team-high eighth home run of the season in the loss, and Jaime Ferrer extended his hitting streak to 14 games.

FSU has dropped five consecutive games and eight of its last nine.

For the second straight game, FSU scored a run in the first inning, this time on a two-out RBI single from Treyton Rank. Tibbs scored after a double and moved to third on Ferrer’s infield single.

The Cavaliers tied it in the bottom of the inning against Ryan Denison when Ethan Anderson singled to score Jake Gelof with two outs.

Carson Montgomery (0-2) made his first relief appearance of the season, entering in the second with runners on second and third with one out. With two outs, the Cavaliers tried to score on a ball that got away from Colton Vincent, but Vincent tossed to Montgomery at the plate, who applied the tag before Anthony Stephan could touch the plate.

Ferrer singled again in the third inning, plating Ben Barrett from second base for a 2-1 lead. During his hitting streak, Ferrer is hitting .410.

After Virginia took the lead on a pair of fielder’s choice grounders in the fifth inning, Tibbs hit a first-pitch home run off Kevin Jaxel to tie the game. Tibbs leads FSU with eight home runs, 33 runs and 25 RBI.

Virginia’s six runs in the seventh inning came on just two hits; four FSU pitchers combined to walk five Cavaliers and hit two with a pitch.

Titan Kamaka hit a pinch-hit home run in the ninth inning.

He leads FSU with a .390 average, 33 runs, 25 RBI; his eight home runs this season and 18 for his career also lead the team. Tibbs has reached safely in 16 straight games and in 65 of his 68 career starts; Tibbs also drew his 24th walk of the year, 15 more than the next closest Nole.

  • Jaime Ferrer singled in the first inning to extend his hitting streak to a career-long 14 games. During that span, Ferrer is 25-for-61 (.410) with 10 runs, 14 RBI, five doubles, two home runs and three walks.

  • Treyton Rank hit an RBI single in his first at-bat, extending his hitting streak to a career-long four games. He threw out a runner at third base, his first career outfield assist and FSU’s fifth of the season.

Fridays opener

Florida State's struggles continued Friday afternoon at No. 8 Virginia.

Virginia scored unearned runs in the bottom of the ninth and 10th innings to beat FSU, 3-2, in front of 3,006 fans at Disharoon Park in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Virginia (20-2 overall, 5-2 ACC) improved to 14-0 at home with the victory. The loss was the Seminoles' (12-10, 3-4) fourth straight.

FSU starting pitcher Jackson Baumeister allowed just one run in 5 innings, while four relievers did not allow an earned run in 4.2 innings.

FSU leads early in a tight game

FSU led for the first half of the game after DeAmez Ross led off with a walk and scored on Ben Barrett’s ground out.

After the Cavaliers tied it in the sixth inning, FSU was working out of trouble for the back half of the game.

Andrew Armstrong faced the bases loaded with no outs in the eighth inning when he got a strikeout and a double play to keep the game tied.

Treyton Rank doubled with one out in the ninth inning to give FSU runners at second and third. McGwire Holbrook pinch hit and reached on a fielder error by the third baseman to score Nander De Sedas and give FSU the lead.

Virginia was down to its final strike twice in the bottom of the ninth. With two outs, Virginia walked and singled before the runners moved up a base on an error. The tying run scored on a wild pitch from Connor Whittaker.

In the 10th, pinch-hitter Chris Baker reached on a fielding error by shortstop Jordan Carrion that allowed the winning run to score from second base.

  • Jaime Ferrer started as the designated hitter, his first start as DH this season. He was 2-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to a career-long 13 games. During that span, Ferrer is 23-for-57 (.404) with 10 runs, 13 RBI, five doubles, two home runs and three walks.

  • DeAmez Ross walked twice and singled in his first three plate appearances; he has reached safely in all nine games to begin his career and has an OBP of .477.

  • Treyton Rank singled, matching his career-long hit streak of three games. He also had FSU’s lone extra-base hit, a double in the ninth inning.

  • James Tibbs III was intentionally walked in the third inning, his second of the year. Tibbs leads FSU with 23 walks (Cam Smith, the next closest Seminole has 8, including one Friday); Tibbs has reached safely in 15 straight games and in 64 of 67 career starts.

  • Florida State tied its season high with eight walks drawn.

  • Colton Vincent threw out his fifth attempted steal this season.
