Fuhr powers Kennedy Catholic to senior night win over Jamestown

May 10—HERMITAGE — Stargell Fuhr and his parents were the first to be handed some flowers and walk down the third-base line on Monday afternoon. The public address announcer read his senior night comments thanking his family and his catchers.

He didn't need much help from his catchers a couple hours before when he stepped onto the pitcher's mound. Fuhr struck out 11 in five innings of work as Kennedy Catholic beat Jamestown 8-1 on KC's campus.

"I felt pretty good," Fuhr said. "Was kinda pumping up there. I was roping the fastball, for the mostpart, they weren't really hitting it — making nice, solid contact — so I stuck with it and it worked for me."

Fuhr allowed one run on two hits and two walks. Davey Cochenour and Jayson Young both pitched scoreless innings to cap the victory for the Golden Eagles (4-11, 4-9 Region 1).

Dom Rapp, Remington Hart, Cord Pocza, Cochenour and Young drove in runs for the Golden Eagles. Hart was 2-for-2 with a run scored, Rapp and Pozca was 2-for-4 with a run scored and Cochenour was 2-for-3 with a run.

"I kind of have [the batting order] separated into two groups of four," Kennedy Catholic coach Steve Pinney said. "Get a couple guys on base and come through with a little bit of a consistent heavier stick, and same thing in the bottom half of the order.

"Seems to be working. We've been holding to that most of the year."

Aidan Woyt, Cole Ternent, Aaron Slifka and Andrew Gould singled for the Muskies (0-10, 0-10). Ternent drove in Peyton McElhinny for their only run on a single to right field in the top of the third inning.

Connor Doebereiner took the loss. He allowed eight runs — five earned — on nine hits and a pair of walks. He struck out two in four innings of work.

It's been a development year for the Muskies. McElhinny is the only senior on the roster, and the bulk of the roster is sophomore and juniors.

"We're all underclassman," Jamestown coach Jason Floch said. "We have one senior. We only have 11 kids."

While the Muskies struggled to hit, the Golden Eagles' bat came alive in the early innings. Kennedy Catholic scored three in the second, two in the third and three more in the fourth.

It was another strong offensive outing for KC. After starting the season 1-9, the Golden Eagles have won three of their last five. In their first 10 games, they scored 23 runs total. In their last five — West Middlesex, Wilmington, Reynolds and two against Jamestown — they have scored 38 runs.

It was a unique offseason for the Golden Eagles.

There wasn't much time to get into baseball shape with players on the Neshannock boys hockey team that won the D2 PIHL title and the boys basketball team reaching the 2A semifinals.

"I didn't have a whole team here until the season starts," Pinney said. "It was kinda hit and miss with things."

Now the Golden Eagles are starting to build some momentum. Last season, they finished 7-8 in the region. With several weeks to go, Fuhr and the rest of the veteran players want to match their regional win total from last season.

"We're really trying to tie last year and get all seven [wins]," Fuhr said. "It could be huge for momentum going into the playoffs in a few weeks."
