Bafta winners 2019 in full: Every award as Olivia Colman is crowned Best Actress for The Favourite

The Favourite cleaned up at the 2019 BAFTAs, winning seven out of the 12 categories it was nominated in, including Outstanding British Film and Best Actress for Olivia Colman.

National treasure Colman was honoured for her role as Queen Anne in Yorgos Lanthimos’ historical comedy, while her co-star Rachel Weisz picked up Best Supporting Actress.

Colman, who fought off competition from Viola Davis, Melissa McCarthy, Glenn Close and Lady Gaga to take the title, struggled to read her acceptance speech, telling the audience she was “shaky”.

The film also picked up gongs for Best Original Screenplay, Costume Design and Production Design, but it missed out on Best Director which went to Alfonso Cuarón for Roma. The Netflix hit also won Best Cinematography, Film Not in the English Language and the coveted Best Film.

Best Actor went to Rami Malek for his powerful portrayal of the late Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody. He was congratulated by the Queen legend’s band mate Brian May who gave him a huge hug before taking to the stage.

“I still cannot believe that I’m included with this group of actors,” Malek said. “It’s quite difficult entering your [British] world with this role, as an outsider. It’s not lost on me how sacred your musical heritage is.”

Richard E Grant missed out on Best Supporting Actor to Green Book’s Mahershala Ali while the award for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer went to Michael Pearce and Lauren Dark for Beast.

A Star is Born was largely snubbed, missing out on Best Director and Actor for Bradley Cooper and Best Actress for Gaga. But it swerved going home empty handed, with the film winning Best Original Music.

Gaga posted a picture of herself appearing to cry as she thanked fans for their support on Twitter. The singer, who is currently in Los Angeles ahead of the Grammy Awards, posted: “I can’t believe we just won Best Original Music @BAFTA ‘s . I wish so much I was there but am at the Grammy’s to show them our love as well. We made a film about music. This means the world to me. Thank u to all our fans we love u so much, we wouldn’t be here without u #BAFTAs.”
