The Full Monty's Robert Carlyle has opened up about the new show's "emotional" nod to the original 1997 movie.

The actor returns as Gaz in the new FX and Disney+ sequel series, which pays homage to the original film when the gang perform their iconic strip dance to Tom Jones' 'You Can Leave Your Hat On' – but this time, there isn't any stripping.

Speaking to Digital Spy about the moment and what it was like performing the dance again after more than two decades, Carlyle began: "Well, you know, there was actually a choreographer that was brought in that day to kind of put us through it."

He continued: "But I decided not to do it, not to look at it. I said, 'I don't want to do that. It's been 25 years. There's no way they would just suddenly go, 'Oh, yeah, this is what you do in this routine.'

"So it's as though I'm trying to make it look even worse than it was before, in the original. And anybody who's seen me dance is going to definitely agree with that. So it was a strange thing to do."

Although his dancing might not have been up to par, Carlyle admitted that it was "emotional" to film the scene and hear the music again after so many years.

"One of the most beautiful things about that was that when we were shooting it, the music – that song came on. They blasted it through speakers," he shared.

"After that little moment ended, the crew… I mean, the crew were clapping and cheering.

"It was quite an emotional moment, because we thought, 'God, that's been 25 years since we've all been in and out of one spot, hearing that music'. A wonderful moment."

The Full Monty series is streaming now on Disney+, along with the original film which is also available to watch on the streaming service. In the US it's available on Hulu.
