A full Sunday with two opportunities for music fans

Members of the Bremerton WestSound Symphony and friends perform in two events this Sunday. At 10:30 a.m., for the Advent service at Bremerton United Methodist Church, we will perform a Sanctus, a Benedictus, and an Agnus Dei.I composed the Sanctus based on the pre-Slavic music of the Istrian Peninsula in Croatia. This is an up-tempo, almost frenetic celebration which echoes the ancient Glagolitic Masses of that region.Mozart's Benedictus K.65, is perhaps the earliest piece by Mozart that we have ever performed. At the age of 12, he was still experimenting with harmony and put as many different chords as possible into this short work. The Agnus Dei is one of the most famous melodies by George Bizet, the composer of Carmen. This familiar work has been a favorite of singers including Enrico Caruso and Luciano Pavarotti. After church on Sunday, have a good lunch, then head over to the Central Kitsap Performing Arts Center for the Festival of Keys — a great program featuring the finest piano prodigies of Kitsap County. These are the students of Dr. Irene Bowling who will perform classical showpieces, trios, and ensembles with holiday music, and even Gustav Holst. Have you ever heard his dynamic and rousing Jupiter, from The Planets, performed on 5 pianos? This is your chance. There will be up to 11 keyboards for this concert.Dr. Bowling has been working musical miracles in her geodesic dome on Chico Way and the vast majority of our soloists and Young Artist Winners have come from her studio for many years. This is an opportunity to sample this very important component of cultural life in Kitsap. In addition, the students have decided that after the costs of renting the hall are met, all remaining funds will be donated to local food banks for the holidays. Bravo to all our students and their professor.Sunday MorningWhat: Mozart, Bizet, and Futterman at Bremerton United Methodist ChurchWho: Advent Mass with members of the Bremerton WestSound SymphonyWhere: Bremerton United Methodist Church, 1150 Marine DriveWhen: Dec 11, 10:30 a.m.
