Fun for the season: Celebrate the holidays and more with these five weekend things to do
Holiday traditions and other events abound around Springfield this weekend. Here are fun activities for family and friends to enjoy the season and beyond.
Time to rock
Rock out to 70s classic anthems featuring the music of Led Zeppelin, Styx, Journey, Pink Floyd, and more at Danenberger Family Vineyards, 12341 Irish Road, New Berlin. Showtime is 8 p.m., Friday. Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. This is a rescheduled show from a Sept. 3 rainout and tickets from that show will be honored. Information: (217) 488-6321.
Lego on displays
Head to Jacksonville Area Museum and check out “Building with Brick – The Art of Lego,” an exhibit that features the talents of area Lego artists of all ages. A three-by-five-foot Hogwarts School is the centerpiece of the exhibition. See the displays Saturdays and Wednesdays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sundays, 1 to 4 p.m., through Feb. 4. The museum, located at 301 E. State St., will be closed on Christmas Day, New Year’s Day, and Jan. 2 – 8.
There is no admission charge but a donation of $5 is suggested to keep the museum operating. Information: www.jacksonvilleareamuseum.org
Explore holiday nostalgia of soul food
Join in on the discussion of the book "12 Days of a Soul Food Christmas" and meet author LaShonda M. Stewart, 2 p.m., Saturday at the Springfield-Central Illinois African American History Museum, 1440 Monument Ave.,
Stewart's book explores the nostalgia of Black traditionalism during the holiday season. Admission is free. Bring a toy to donate. Information: (217) 391-6323.
Santa, carols, tree lighting at Washington Park
Celebrate the season Sunday with a triple event at the annual Caroling at the Carillon in Washington Park.
A jingle bells spectacular kicks off the fun at 3 p.m. with kids’ activities including games, Santa, apple cider and donuts from the Apple Barn. At 4 p.m., gather around a roaring bonfire to sing Christmas carols accompanied by the bells of the Thomas Rees Memorial Carillon. Free songbooks will be provided. The Trinity Wind Ensemble also will perform. Festivities culminate at 5:20 p.m. with the lighting of a new Washington Park Christmas tree.
Community sing 1850s style
Dress in period clothing and travel back in time to the 1850s for an Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln special holiday worship and carol sing, 6 p.m., Sunday at First Presbyterian Church, 321 S. Seventh St., Springfield.
Lincoln reenactors will greet guests. A freewill offering will be taken and a reception will follow the service.
