Learn some Meyersdale history, as Meyersdale Public Library Archivist Jennifer Hurl and Foy family historian Randall Frye lead a tour Aug. 16, of the historical Olinger/Foy home at 125 Broadway St., built in 1869-'70 by John M. Olinger (grandson of 1776 original area settler John Olinger) and later owned by Col. George L. Foy. Learn about the individuals who have resided inside. Ligonier Night Market

The monthly Ligonier Night Market is around The Diamond and along Main Street in historic downtown Ligonier. Food products from more than 30 local farmers and food processors. The Ligonier Country Market (LCM) and the Ligonier Valley Chamber of Commerce co-sponsor the Night Market, from 5-8 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month through September (Aug. 17, and Sept. 21). Senior Safe Driving Seminar

State Rep. Jim Rigby (R-Cambria/Somerset) and Seniors for Safe Driving are teaming up to host a Mature Driver Improvement Course from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 17, at the Cresson Fire Hall, 223 Ashcroft Ave., Cresson. Concerts in the Park Series

Handgun Day at Frostburg Rifle/Pistol Range

The Big Savage Sportsmen’s Club “Handgun Day at the Frostburg Rifle/Pistol Range” Aug. 19. The event is free and designed for those citizens who are thinking about handgun ownership, or who own a handgun but don’t feel comfortable shooting it. Those attending under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent, or legal guardian. National Rifle Association Certified Instructors will provide short workshops throughout the day to explain laws regarding transport, storage and safety, responsibilities of handgun ownership, and will demonstrate grip, aiming and shooting techniques. Live firing will follow each workshop and will be supervised by NRA certified Range Safety Officers of Big Savage Sportsmen’s Club and Piney Mt. Sportsmen’s Association. The range is off of Clifton Terrace, Route 40, west of Frostburg, across the road and up a bit from Kemp Drive. Evening on the Summit: Insect Invaders

The next Evening on the Summit is at 8 p.m. Aug. 19, in the amphitheater. This free presentation, Insect Invaders: The Battle to Save our Park's Native Forests, is presented by Margaret Speicher. Program attendees will learn more about these insects, their effect on our forests, and how the National Park Service is responding to this complex challenge. Music at Penn Alps

Music at Penn Alps is finishing the 2023 season with Neal Corwell on euphonium and Katherine SIncell-Corwell accompanying on piano at 7 p.m. Aug. 19, in the Great Hall in Spruce Forest, Grantsville, Maryland. Back to School Bash and Cruise-In

Christmas in the Park Back to School Bash for the community starts at 1 p.m. Aug. 20, at Central City Park, 699 Chestnut St., Central City. There will be a parade featuring classic cars and groups are participating by decorating their cars. There will be crafters, food, bubble tea and the Good Times Ice Cream Truck, and the band 3rd Avenue. The event will feature a basket raffle and an 18 foot waterslide and 40 foot inflatable zipline as well as free haircuts for the children, back to school supplies and games as well. The classic cars will be on display as well as some some surprise guests. Cruise-In line up at 12:30 p.m. at the PNA, 921 Main St., Central City. Classic cars, motorcycles and floats welcome. Heritage Hike: Staple Bend Tunnel

Join a park ranger on a hike to the first railroad tunnel in America, the Staple Bend Tunnel, at 2 p.m. Aug. 20. Reservations are required for this free hike. Call the Visitor Center at 814-886-6150 to sign up. Heritage Hike: Staple Bend Tunnel. The hike is five miles in length. Participants will learn about the history of the tunnel. Several features from the days of the railroad, including stone sleepers, are still visible. Participants are encouraged to wear good walking shoes and bring water. Solar Law Symposium

The third annual Penn State Solar Law Symposium for attorneys and energy professionals will be held virtually from noon to 4:30 p.m. Aug. 23. The event, co-sponsored by Penn State Extension, Penn State’s Center for Energy Law and Policy, and the Penn State Center for Agricultural and Shale Law, is designed for those with beginning and intermediate levels of solar law knowledge. This year’s webinar topics will include a large-scale solar overview; solar development from the perspectives of the landowner, developer, and the municipality; Public Utility Commission considerations; and PJM (Pennsylvania-New Jersey-Maryland interconnection) considerations. Seven Springs Wine Fest

The 30th annual Seven Springs Wine Festival is Aug. 25-27, featuring nearly 25 wineries. Friday night celebrates the event’s creation with a “Party Like It’s 1993” theme with entertainment by the band Old Skool from 7-9 p.m. Don your vintage 90s attire like shoulder pads, baby-doll dresses, slouch socks, track suits, grunge gear, denim jackets, and more. Two wine seminars will be held. The Seven Springs culinary team will host “Cooking with Wine” and Black Dog Wine Company will host “Wine Tasting Like A Pro.” Ticket sales are available online and may also be available at the event gate. Unite on the Rock

Traveling evangelist Jay Lowder and recording artist Jason Crabb will headline "Unite on the Rock" at the Allegany County Fairgrounds on Sept. 10-12. This Christian faith festival is free. Lowder, who served as the guest speaker during the region’s National Day of Prayer events held in May, brings an energetic message of hope to reach those struggling with depression, addiction, and lost purpose. “Fields of Faith” will kick off the event on Sunday with a focus on area youth. A car show, disc golf, cornhole, and other field games will begin at 3 p.m. Food and activities will be offered from 4-6 p.m. Fellowship with Christian Athletes will begin at 6 p.m. The main service will begin at 7 p.m. with worship by Crabb and a message from Lowder. The evening will wrap up with prize giveaways. On Monday and Tuesday evenings, “The Harvest” will begin with worship at 7 p.m. followed by a message from Lowder. Golf Tournament for Benevolent Care Fund

Laurel View Village, a full-service Continuing Care Retirement Community's (CCRC) annual golf tournament is Sept. 13, at Windber Country Club. The day will include a boxed lunch, 18 holes of golf with cart, golf shirt, dinner, and prizes. This event is specifically designed to raise funds for The Caring Fund, a restricted endowment, whose sole purpose is to assist residents whose financial resources, through no fault of their own, are insufficient to cover the cost of their care, at Laurel View Village. Last year alone, Laurel View Village provided residents with more than $800,00.00 in benevolent assistance. Sporting clays fundraiser

The Salvation Army Western Pennsylvania Division hosting the sixth annual Shoot for Hope fundraiser, in honor of Michael Stark. This annual sporting clay fundraiser benefits Pathway of Hope, a program that aims to empower families and end generational poverty. Participants will spend the day shooting clay targets at this outdoor event, presented by BNY Mellon and the Stark family, on Sept. 14, at Highlands Sporting Clays, with accommodations provided by Seven Springs Mountain Resort. Space is limited. Visit salvationarmywpa.org/shootforhope to purchase tickets. Registration will open at 8 a.m., followed by safety training at 9:45 a.m., a shotgun start at 10 a.m., followed by a buffet lunch and awards. All skill levels are welcome to participate in this 100-target event. A shotgun will be available at each station; however, shooters can bring their own equipment. Ammunition will be provided; instruction is also available.

Fall 'in Baconfest

The Richland Township Volunteer Fire Department Fall 'in Baconfest is from 5-9 p.m. Sept. 15 and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sept 16, at the Geistown Fire Station, 631 Lamberd Ave., Geistown. Car cruise, fun factory, food and craft vendors, children's area, bacon eating contest, basket raffles in the bay, and music by "Octane" and "Midnight Graffiti." Hosted by Richland fire department and Geistown borough.

NRA banquet

The friends of the NRA will be hosting a banquet Sept. 17, at the Bakersville fire hall. Doors open at 2 p.m. Tickets available by contacting Bob Barnes at 814-442-8077. This is a fundraiser for the shooting sports, raising money for the high school shooting teams, Boy Scouts, 4-H, or any other organization requesting grants to promote the shooting sports. Ticket packages are available with a special offer for pre-banquet purchases.

Family Hospice grief support group

Family Hospice, Part of UPMC, is offering free grief support sessions at the Family Hospice (formerly In Touch Hospice) office, 1474 N. Center Ave., Somerset. Groups will be held from 6-7 p.m. Tuesdays from Sept. 19-Oct. 10. Family Hospice Spiritual Counselor the Rev. Duane Riddle is facilitating this group for attendees to share their feelings with others who are grieving. Space is limited. Registration is required by Sept. 18 by contacting the Rev. Riddle at 814-289-1153.

Oldies Record Hop

Wave (Windber Area Visioning Experience) presents Oldies Record Hops from 6-9:30 p.m. at Windber Recreation Park. Sept. 24 is Juke Box Oldies. Food and soda available.

Fired Iron Antique Tractor Show

The Tired Iron Antique Tractor Show, Sept. 30, will be at Laurel Hill State Park beach parking area. The featured tractor is the International Harvester. Registration begins at 8 a.m. Awards given. Vendors, childrens' pedal pull, antique tractor games, antique tractor ride, tractor square dancing, basket raffle, Boy Scouts chicken barbecue, ice cream.
