‘PAWing IT FOREward’ Annual Golf Tournament VII

Another very successful event for Service PAWS of Central PA (SPCP) as this year’s event was the most successful ever with a net profit of more than $32,000. The seventh annual tournament was held at Valley Country Club. The tournament is the primary fund raising event which serves to help SPCP in its primary mission of supporting service dogs and those they serve. SPCP is a nonprofit, all-volunteer organization which works with numerous training schools to identify individuals who may benefit by having a highly trained service dog to support them in their day-to-day activities. SPCP can provide funding to obtain, train and place these animals and can also help cover significant veterinary expenses for these animals when the need arises.

Baskets, unwanted gifts needed

New baskets, unwanted baskets and gifts as well as promotion items are needed for the Veterans Basket Party to be held Sept. 9, to support disabled veterans. They can use unwanted baskets and gifts no longer wanted and baskets of any kind, gift cards, tokens, services, individual items. Laurel Highlands Historical Village is sponsoring a 2-day Arts and Heritage Festival at Duman Lake Park Sept. 9-10. Arts and craft vendors, food vendors, artisans, re-enactors, county agencies, living history groups, and nonprofits are invited to participate. Featured will be musical entertainment, crafts and food vendors, artisans, nonprofit agencies sharing what service their organization provides in the community and the history of their organization and encampments depicting the different military camps during different war eras. Maple City Farmers' Market

Confluence Creative Arts Center

Confluence Creative Arts Center has activities planned. Aug 24 6:30-8 p.m. Come Create: Work on individual sewing, knitting, and crochet projects plus periodic opportunities for learning new skills or projects. A cyanotype workshop is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 11, by Maryland artist Leah Clare Michaels. The workshop will be held in conjunction with an exhibit of Michael’s work in the gallery at the Tissue Farm in Confluence, where she will be an artist-in-residence from Aug. 7-13. Concerts in the Park Series

Ebensburg’s Concerts in the Park series will continue this year, from 6-9 p.m. at Penn Eben Park, 227 West High St. In addition to Penn Eben parking lot, the 100 block of north Julian Street will be closed so that attendees have even more room to spread out. This year’s line-up includes concerts with new and returning bands, featuring all different types of music. Angels of East Africa, Thunder in the City

The Angels of East Africa, 15th annual Thunder in the City event starts at 10 a.m. each day, Aug. 11-13. Angels of East Africa, 7368 Lincoln Highway, Central City, is a nonprofit charity started by the Machine Gun Preacher Sam Childers who has been rescuing children out of war zones in Eastern Africa for more than 25 years. The motorcycle rally and charity event is centered right off Route 30 near Central City, and the surrounding Somerset area. Sign in at 11 a.m. and kickstands up at 12.30 p.m. Cost includes lunch, with soda or coffee and evening dinner on return from ride. Proceeds raised are going to Angels of East to house, clothe, feed and educate children who have come out of a war zone areas in Eastern Africa. Vendors, flea market, live musical entertainment from Australia country rock legend, Steve Grace and Aaron Partridge, special guest celebrities, motorcycle high wire act, axe throwing, inflatables for children and adults, brewery, wine tasting, pony rides, tattoos, piercings, mechanical bull, face painting, rock climbing wall, animal show and more. Blood drive

The American Red Cross blood drive Aug. 11, at St. Therese of the Child Jesus, 536 Decker Ave., Johnstown, is in honor of Dan Hutchison, a dedicated blood donor for years until he found himself in need of lifesaving donations as he suffers from blood loss and other medical conditions. In his lifetime, Hutchison donated approximately three gallons of blood to help patients in need, and he has received nearly 30 units of blood through transfusions during his medical treatments. Hutchison encourages the Johnstown community to give to ensure blood is on the shelves for patients like him. The goal is to collect 22 units of blood at this drive. The Stroll

The Stroll, Ligonier's annual car show, sock hop and sidewalk sales is at Diamond Park, from 5-9 p.m. Aug. 11. DJ Pete will be taking requests and playing oldies on the bandstand from 5-9 p.m.

Friends Under the Stars

Flight 93 National Memorial Dark Sky program, Friends Under the Stars is 8 p.m. Aug. 11. Sponsored by Friends of Flight 93 in partnership with the National Park Service, astronomy clubs from Cumberland, Maryland, and Hollidaysburg will be onsite. A benefit auction for Mennonite Central Committee will be held on the grounds of Kaufman Mennonite Church, 916 Miller Picking Road, Davidsville, Aug. 11-12. Antiques, Artisans and Ales, Somerset's annual antique show with a twist, is 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 12, on the streets of Uptown Somerset. Annual "Harvest Market Dinner and Dance"

Farm-to-table foodies and music fans annual picnic-style Harvest Market Dinner and Dance will be held outdoors from 5 to 8 p.m. Aug. 12, on the market grounds at the LWA Farm, located just off West Main Street, Springer Road, and Route 30 in Ligonier Township. Co-sponsored by the Ligonier Country Market (LCM) and Loyalhanna Watershed Association (LWA). Laurel Highlands residents and visitors can purchase a wide, a la carte selection of locally prepared foods and beverages that LCM vendors will create to celebrate the farm-to-table lifestyle, which supports local farmers and food producers. A highlight of this year’s event will be music by Bon Journey, an acclaimed Pittsburgh-area and national musical act paying tribute to the songs of renowned rock bands Journey and Bon Jovi. Dessert Theatre Performance

"The Golden Girls Say I Do," presented by Iron Bridge Dinner Theatre is 7 p.m. Aug. 12, in the M. Josephine Paul Family Museum on the first floor of Community Arts Center of Cambria County, 1217 Menoher Boulevard, in the Westmont section of Johnstown. Join the fabulous four as they race the clock to see who will be the first to say those ever popular words. Dorothy, Sophia, Blanche and Rose are all realizing life is too short, but which one of these will make it through to the finish line and say "I Do" in the dating game. Milford Church annual picnic

Milford Church will host its annual picnic from 3:30-7 p.m. Aug. 12, at the church grove. The meal will feature hot roast beef sandwiches, mashed potatoes, filling and gravy. Hot dogs, hamburgers, salads, desserts and ice cream also available. There will be entertainment between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. Groups include three A’s and a J (vocal group), Dennis Wright (piano selections), Heart & Soul (barbershop quartet) and Just Friends (autoharp/guitar/mandolin/harmonica). Music at Penn Alps

Music at Penn Alps presents Susan Zoller and Michael Lundein performing Piano 4-hands at 7 p.m. Aug. 12, in the Great Hall in Spruce Forest, Grantsville, Maryland. Holding a bachelor's degree in music from Frostburg State University, Zoller is now the music director at Cresaptown United Methodist Church and also teaches privately. Michael Lundien holds a Master of Music in Piano Performance from the University of Maryland, and a bachelor’s in piano performance from Frostburg State University. He has been teaching piano for more than seven years and has performed classical works and piano compositions at several venues throughout Maryland.

Antiques & Collectibles

The Hanna’s Town Antiques & Collectors Market is held the second Sunday of each month through October. The gate opens at 7:30 a.m. Sunday, and the market continues through early afternoon, although some vendors are set up by 1 p.m. Saturday and sell that afternoon. There is parking on site. Monday Movies on the Amphitheatre

The Community Arts Center of Cambria County (CACCC) will begin its first summer of Monday Movies on the Amphitheatre. Popcorn, snacks and refreshments will be available for an affordable price. All movies begin at 8:30 p.m. Aug. 14 Aladdin-animated (1992). Energetic musical based on the "Arabian Nights" tale. It's the story of a street urchin who discovers a magic lamp. Somerset Night Out

Community spaghetti dinner

A free community spaghetti dinner will be held from 4–6 p.m. Aug. 15, at New Beginnings Outreach Center Church, complete with spaghetti, meatballs, salad, bread and dessert. Take-out only. Participants will not have to leavevehicles, drive through the car port over to the Dream Center, and the dinners will be delivered to the vehicles. Historical House Tour

Learn some Meyersdale history, as Meyersdale Public Library Archivist Jennifer Hurl and Foy family historian Randall Frye lead a tour Aug. 16, of the historical Olinger/Foy home at 125 Broadway St., built in 1869-'70 by John M. Olinger (grandson of 1776 original area settler John Olinger) and later owned by Col. George L. Foy. Learn about the individuals who have resided inside. Some of Colonel Foy's paintings will be on display. This event is hosted by current owners Vickie and Gene Brown, to benefit the library and its patrons, prior to the home changing hands. Ligonier Night Market

The monthly Ligonier Night Market is around The Diamond and along Main Street in historic downtown Ligonier. Food products from more than 30 local farmers and food processors. Night Market added last year to sell their hand-made goods and products ― ranging from unique woodcrafts to original artwork and more. The Ligonier Country Market (LCM) and the Ligonier Valley Chamber of Commerce co-sponsor the Night Market, which will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month through September (Aug. 17, and Sept. 21). Musical entertainment schedule: artists will perform on the Diamond Park bandstand: Aug. 17: Detention; Sept. 21: Cashout. Books Come Alive ― a unique library-based outreach program that takes best loved children's books and turns them into 30-minute musicals designed to reach students in kindergarten through sixth grade. Summer development series

The Learning Lamp and Pennsylvania Association for the Education of Young Children, PennAEYC, launched a free summer professional development series. The monthly workshops take place through August via Zoom. The sessions meet from 6:30-8:30 p.m. School-age professionals including child care staff, teachers, program directors and summer camp staff are encouraged to attend. Senior Safe Driving Seminar

State Rep. Jim Rigby (R-Cambria/Somerset) and Seniors for Safe Driving are teaming up to host a Mature Driver Improvement Course from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 17, at the Cresson Fire Hall, 223 Ashcroft Ave., Cresson. The Laurel Hill Bluegrass Festival is Aug. 19-20 at the Laurel Hill State Park Complex. The music runs from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday. Sunday at 8:30 a.m. is the Mountain Laurel 5K Run/Walk, 10 a.m. church service on the Main Stage, music from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Handgun Day at Frostburg Rifle/Pistol Range

The Big Savage Sportsmen’s Club is hosting a “Handgun Day at the Frostburg Rifle/Pistol Range” Aug. 19. The event is free and designed for those citizens who are thinking about handgun ownership, or who own a handgun but don’t feel comfortable shooting it. This event will provide the opportunity to shoot a variety of types and calibers made available by local gun dealer Mountain Maryland Firearms Training, of Frostburg, Maryland. Shooters may also bring their own handgun and ammunition. Those attending under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent, or legal guardian. National Rifle Association Certified Instructors will provide short workshops throughout the day to explain laws regarding transport, storage and safety, responsibilities of handgun ownership, and will demonstrate grip, aiming and shooting techniques. Live firing will follow each workshop and will be supervised by NRA certified Range Safety Officers of Big Savage Sportsmen’s Club and Piney Mt. Sportsmen’s Association. The range is off of Clifton Terrace, Route 40, west of Frostburg, across the road and up a bit from Kemp Drive. Participants may attend any time between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. The range will close at 4 p.m. The event will be held rain or shine. Back to School Bash and Cruise-In

Christmas in the Park Back to School Bash for the community starts at 1 p.m. Aug. 20, at Central City Park, 699 Chestnut St., Central City. There will be a parade featuring classic cars and groups are participating by decorating their cars. There will be crafters, food, bubble tea and the Good Times Ice Cream Truck, and the band 3rd Avenue. The event will feature a basket raffle and an 18 foot waterslide and 40 foot inflatable zipline as well as free haircuts for the children, back to school supplies and games as well. The classic cars will be on display as well as some some surprise guests. Cruise-In line up at 12:30 p.m. at the PNA, 921 Main St., Central City. Classic cars, motorcycles and floats welcome. Parade starts at 1 p.m.

Seven Springs Wine Fest

All things Pennsylvania wine will be celebrated Aug. 25-27, at the 30th annual Seven Springs Wine Festival. Each year, Seven Springs and the Pennsylvania Wine Association partner to bring together wineries from across Pennsylvania. This year’s event will feature nearly 25 wineries including Bella Terra Vineyards, Cellar ‘54, Happy Valley Vineyard & Winery, King View Meadery, Starr Hill Winery, and Wine O’Clock Somewhere Winery. Friday night’s festivities will celebrate the event’s creation with a “Party Like It’s 1993” theme with entertainment headlined by the band Old Skool from 7-9 p.m. Guests are encouraged to don their vintage 90s attire like shoulder pads, baby-doll dresses, slouch socks, track suits, grunge gear, denim jackets, and more. Two wine seminars will be held Saturday and Sunday of the event. The Seven Springs culinary team will host “Cooking with Wine” and Black Dog Wine Company will host “Wine Tasting Like A Pro.” Ticket sales are available online and may also be available at the event gate. Admission to the festival includes a souvenir wine glass, samples from up to 25 Pennsylvania wineries, music on multiple stages, access to wine seminars on Saturday and Sunday, and complimentary wine check service for purchases made from attending wineries. The Seven Springs Wine Festival is open only to guests aged 21 and up.

Kolo dance lessons

Unite on the Rock

Traveling evangelist Jay Lowder and recording artist Jason Crabb will headline "Unite on the Rock" at the Allegany County Fairgrounds on Sept. 10-12. This Christian faith festival is free. Lowder, who served as the guest speaker during the region’s National Day of Prayer events held in May, brings an energetic message of hope to reach those struggling with depression, addiction, and lost purpose. “Fields of Faith” will kick off the event on Sunday with a focus on area youth. A car show, disc golf, cornhole, and other field games will begin at 3 p.m. Food and activities will be offered from 4-6 p.m. Fellowship with Christian Athletes will begin at 6 p.m. The main service will begin at 7 p.m. with worship by Crabb and a message from Lowder. The evening will wrap up with prize giveaways. On Monday and Tuesday evenings, “The Harvest” will begin with worship at 7 p.m. followed by a message from Lowder. Golf Tournament for Benevolent Care Fund

Laurel View Village, a full-service Continuing Care Retirement Community's (CCRC) annual golf tournament is Sept. 13, at Windber Country Club. The day will include a boxed lunch, 18 holes of golf with cart, golf shirt, dinner, and prizes. This event is specifically designed to raise funds for The Caring Fund, a restricted endowment, whose sole purpose is to assist residents whose financial resources, through no fault of their own, are insufficient to cover the cost of their care, at Laurel View Village. Last year alone, Laurel View Village provided residents with more than $800,00.00 in benevolent assistance. To pay for this care, Laurel View Village relies on contributions from individual donors, corporate donors, and fundraising events such as this golf tournament, an annual pledge dinner, basket party and Christmas in the Village vendor show. Sporting clays fundraiser

The Salvation Army Western Pennsylvania Division hosting the sixth annual Shoot for Hope fundraiser, in honor of Michael Stark. This annual sporting clay fundraiser benefits Pathway of Hope, a program that aims to empower families and end generational poverty. Participants will spend the day shooting clay targets at this outdoor event, presented by BNY Mellon and the Stark family, on Sept. 14, at Highlands Sporting Clays, with accommodations provided by Seven Springs Mountain Resort. Registration will open at 8 a.m., followed by safety training at 9:45 a.m., a shotgun start at 10 a.m., followed by a buffet lunch and awards.
