Funeral date set for Coastal Carolina University freshman who was found inside his dorm room

A funeral service has been scheduled for a Coastal Carolina University student who was found inside his dorm room last week.

Devonte Grant, from Little River, died on Nov. 24, at 18 years old, and was found by family members on Nov. 27. A viewing is scheduled at 4 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 5 at Ocean View Funeral Homes, and the funeral service will be held Tuesday, Dec. 6 at 1 p.m. at the Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church in Little River.

The Horry County Coroner’s Office said that Grant died of natural causes.

Grant was a Coastal Carolina freshman majoring in Performing Arts at the time of his death. He was cast into an ensemble role for the university’s production of “The Green Bird,” and was very active in his high school’s theater program.

Lindsay Link, the North Myrtle Beach High School chorus and theater teacher, said Grant gave her “faith in the next generation,” after she recalled a fond memory of Grant helping her clean up late at night after rehearsals, after the rest of the theater students had left the building to go home.

“The hardest thing I think that I’ve done in my teaching career was breaking the news to our chorus class,” Link said. “We had about 40 kids in that class, and about 37 of them had class with him at some point.”

Coastal Carolina students, former teachers, and friends consistently say that Grant had a bright personality.

“He just gave a spark to everybody that he came across, and I’m just so proud to have been his teacher,” Link said.

Tory Gibson, a former cafeteria worker at North Myrtle Beach high school, said she remembered seeing Grant while he worked at a McAlisters in North Myrtle Beach.

“It was a hard Monday because I didn’t even know about it,” Gibson said. “A parent called me and I was just floored.”

Grant will be honored by Coastal Carolina University in a memorial program on April 13, 2023. To view the obituary or donate, click here.
