The funeral service for Wolfgang Schäuble, the long-serving German minister and Christian Democratic Union stalwart who died this week, is to be held in Offenburg on Friday January 5, according to a local newspaper report.

The city in the south-western state of Baden-Württemberg declined to comment on the report in the Offenburger Tageblatt.

The service is to be held in the city's main Protestant church, with burial in the historic Waldbach cemetery in Offenburg, according to the report.

As Schäuble was an honorary citizen of Offenburg, a grave has been made available by the city.

Schäuble, 81, died in Offenburg on Tuesday evening surrounded by his family.

He served as German finance minister under Chancellor Angela Merkel through the eurozone debt crisis.
