The funeral for Memphis Police Department Officer Joseph McKinney, who was killed in a shootout Friday responding to a "suspicious vehicle call," will take place April 22.

McKinney was killed during a shootout between Memphis police officers and 18-year-old Jaylen Lobley and an unnamed 17-year-old. Two other officers were non-critically injured during the shootout. The 17-year-old received critical injuries. Lobley died at the hospital.

"The family of Officer Joseph McKinney sincerely appreciates your prayers, comforting expressions, acts and deeds of kindness extended to them during their time of bereavement," the MPD said in a statement posted to social media.

The funeral will be hosted at Hope Church, 8500 Walnut Grove in Cordova, and begin at 1:30 p.m. Visitation will take place the same day and location, between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

McKinney will be buried after the funeral at Memorial Park Cemetery, located at 5668 Poplar Ave.

When will the Sea of Blue be?

MPD's Sea of Blue, a procession of police vehicles that will have their emergency lights flashing, will take place the day before the funeral at 7:45 p.m. The procession will start at the Southland Mall and end at the corner of East Raines Road and Auburn Road, the Raines Station that McKinney was part of.

McKinney joined the department in 2020.
