The public, as well as state and federal officials will gather in the Kansas Statehouse on Saturday for a ceremony honoring the life of Bob Dole, among a slate of other events in Dole's home state.

Dole died Sunday morning in his sleep at 98 years old, prompting an outpouring of support and memories from political figures in Kansas and nationally, as well as the public.

The Dole Institute of Politics at the University of Kansas announced details Tuesday for events in Russell and Topeka in his honor.

Lie in state, funeral, wreath-laying ceremony in D.C.

The former U.S. senator from Kansas will lie in state Thursday in the U.S. Capitol before a funeral service Friday at the National Cathedral in Washington. A public event will also be held at the World War II Memorial on the National Mall featuring remarks and a wreath-laying ceremony.

Dole's casket is set to arrive in Kansas on Friday evening at Salina Regional Airport, to be met by a delegation, including Gov. Laura Kelly.

A public viewing will between 9 and 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Russell. A service will be held at 11 a.m., with former U.S. Sen. Pat Roberts and current U.S. Sens. Jerry Moran and Roger Marshall offering remarks. The public can pass by Dole's casket following the service to pay their respects before it departs at 1 p.m.

Dole's body will then be received at the Kansas Statehouse on Saturday evening for a public ceremony at 4 p.m. where Kelly, Moran, Marshall, former Sen. Nancy Kassebaum Baker and former Congressman Jim Slattery will give remarks.

Where will Bob Dole be buried?

After the Topeka service, Dole's casket and family will return to Washington.

Dole will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery, according to a spokesman with Kansas GOP Sen. Jerry Moran's office.
