WORCESTER — A funeral Mass for Worcester police Sgt. Derrick Leto, 42, will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Stephen Church on Grafton Street.

The Mass will be followed by burial with military honors at Worcester County Memorial Park in Paxton.

Leto, a diversity officer in the department, died off-duty Friday. Authorities have not given a cause of death.

Visiting hours will be Thursday at Fay & Caswell Life Celebration Home at 61 Myrtle St. from 4 to 7 p.m.

City Manager Eric D. Batista and Police Chief Steven M. Sargent both mourned Leto's death, saying he had a commitment to improving his community, especially the youth.

A Millbury resident, Leto was an 18-year veteran of the police department and a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps.

Leto started the department’s first cadet program and explorer’s program. The two programs look to boost recruitment of candidates from underrepresented communities including people of color and women, according to the police department.
